You think he was going to learn to flare by watching you flare first? He was going to pound it in on his leg regardless of it being the first or second leg. I'd rather find out what I'm dealing with asap. Maybe I've just been very lucky, but I have never had a problem with an F/O not knowing how to fly. I thought that was part of the prerequisite of getting the job.
I did see two 777 Capt.s try to kill me though, one was a LCA 'practicing' an LNAV approach, nearly ended up like Asiana in SFO! The other was demonstrating a flaps 25 landing (we never do those, but he decided he'd try one) and never flared. It was by far the hardest landing I've ever seen, in any airplane. |

Waited again and they finally told me no one was available. Wrote a scathing email complaint and got zero response. Friends of ours just went in as a couple to un-screw all the screwups. The F/O's I flew with seemed more than happy to fly all the legs. Would drinking coffee through a straw to keep from shaking the contents all over the cockpit have anything to do with that?

Well, for me with that MSP guy it was more of a hands off thing, a "fly it however you want" kind of thing. So I wasn't prepared for him not to flare, had I had more time with him I may have picked up on the fact he's not really with it because he just didn't really have a clue about a lot of things. Cocky as hell though so I thought he knew what he was doing. Nope.
"I just do it the way Delta wants it done..." I think is a better opener and leaves less wiggle room for him to get creative. :eek: |

Even with him being a PM on one leg some red flags would've gone up to say watch this guy. So that's why I bought into let the Captain, especially with new hires, do leg 1 of the 12-18 hub and spoke legs and just set a tone and get a feel. If a guy asked I would let them do it, but otherwise the normal was Captain first. I also prefer that as an FO even now because I get a feel for how the Captain does things. Helps me be a better chameleon. Your way I like too and appreciate.... when every pilot is more of a guaranteed quality. |

You haven't flown a 900. We've already had a couple of tail strikes. I just don't want to be on the list and I don't want to be responsible for someone else being on the list, either. Now, get off my lawn. We just briefed it, "Remember, this is a 300, not a 200, so don't flare too much or the spoilers are going to get you!" I hear the same thing on the jumpseat of the 757-300 on almost every leg. They really land that thing flat...and hard, usually. I know it's a pig, or so I'm told, I never flew it. I rode on the jumpseat of a brand new 737-900 last month (still had that new car smell!), the Capt. just said to the F/O, "Remember, this is a 900, so rotate slowly." I heard CAL has scrapped the tail on every one of their 737-900's. Seems Boeing should have put a little roller blade wheel on that tail skid! Or maybe just remove the nose wheel and make it into a Tail Dragger! :D |

:D fwiw I don't mind doing every walk around. On 35 min turns it's your only moment to stretch. And it's a small plane. Doesn't take that long Even though I've been to known to drag it out. :D I guess I'm that guy... hoarding walk arounds. |
