For example, if you have training 1-14 October and can bid a 12 day 75 hour trip, you want to try and bid that trip to touch your training from 1-14 October. Lets say under the hypothetical training schedule you get a trip that goes from 5-17 October. The company will buy your 5-17 October trip and pay you for it while you do whatever flying is required during training. You could then GS for double pay between 15 and 31 October, assuming your category is short manned and you don't exceed any FAA flight time limits.

EDIT: but if you are a new hire it works a little differently. The company still buys your trips, but you only get paid your monthly new hire salary until you are off OE.
To add to what Mike posted there is a shadow period posted after your projected training completion date. Normally it's for two weeks. Anything you bid that touches this shadow period will be dropped and paid for. The period is to allow for IOE. If it crosses from one bid period to another it can be very lucrative especially in a category with long trips.

I KNEW Tampa was making a huge mistake drafting Crab Legs ahead of Mariota.
He wasn't the #1 draft pick, but I said the same thing about Tannehill and he's come along nicely. That said, I wondered the same thing when the experts said Winston would go ahead of Mariota. And I'm a Winston fan. Just hoping he can put it together and not go the Ryan Leaf route.

It's the time period following a redeye on day 4 and crawling into your bed at home.

With the way the economy is and with the block hour plan being not much different than last year or possibly less, I think it will be very hard for reserves to break the guarantee this winter. As a reserve, the only way I see guys making extra money is to greenslip on their days off. If you are going to try and do this, I'd try and group my days off as much as possible in the beginning or end of the month. The beginning because a lot of guys have carryover trips along with the ones who have trips in the beginning days of the month. Less competition so to speak if a GS does pop up.

Hey, it's what my plan is if I get a 330 bid. (I live close to the airport too.) I'll be super junior but I'll bid as many days off in the beginning of the month as possible, throw in a GS for them, and sit reserve for the rest!

Good Luck!

Denny
I know I'm quoting a post from 2012, but please bear with me.

The best bidding strategy for someone on reserve makes sense to me. Group all of your days off together to maximize green slip possibilities. Does the same hold true for an FO holding a line, or would a line holder focus on something other than grouping together off days to maximize pay? Maybe bid for LCA trips followed by highest ADC in order to get more total days off even if they aren't grouped together?

If you are a line holder FO and want to try and green slip, the best thing to do is bid with LCAs and get bought off the trip. This only holds true when there is a lot of training going on...........like now! After that, I would bid trips that have a lot of credit in them. You don't want to run into 100 in 28 problems. This is especially true in international categories. While doing the above, try and avoid trips during the first week of the month. Seems to me that after initial awards there are always more trips left over in the beginning of the month. I'd probably try and group all my trips in the second half of the month.

The above is based you not needing any particular days off. When you do, it can be hard to GS. Good Luck!

You certainly got my undivided attention with this post! I'm going into training for the first time (since new hire) in November, I do NOT want to repeat this guy's experience...!

Worked 12 days got 75 hours pay. Could have worked 12 days for 225 hours pay.
Am I reading this correctly to think this is an international "problem," or is it a question of magnitude? I'm going from a right-sized / maybe slightly overstaffed (?) category to an overstaffed (?) category, with the longest trips in either being 5-day, with predominantly 4-day trips in both (and I don't really know how to define "under" / "over" staffed, so I'm guessing based on what I see in other categories...).

So, TR days late in the month: bid for trips touching those days, get them dropped/paid, then enjoy the extra days off beforehand and/or try to GS, as desired?

Shadow days early in the next month: same idea, bid for trips that touch the shadow days, expect them to be dropped, then get paid the greater of those dropped trips or any OE flown...?

I've received so many emails from ALPA announcing candidates for council 44 captain rep that I have to ask: Who isn't running for captain rep????

The first two I was planning on (DeRosa and Johnson); the other two I'll evaluate further.
