Yeah i’d Suggest not putting your personal Apple ID on your company device.

 

I'm lazy and did not return my Surface 3 and did not participate in the Buyback program.

I plan to keep it and get charged the $175 for not turning it in.

They are saying it will be rendered unusable and wiped of all Delta content.

I'm assuming that means unusable for Delta operations and not that I won't be able to continuing using it to blog and watch 'love stories' on layovers.

The thing won't begin to smoke and self destruct on New Years Day, will it?

 

I don't know anything more than what I've read, but what part of "rendered unusable" doesn't mean what it says?

It's not your property - I imagine Delta (or whoever they lease it from) still owns it, they are just wiping it and rendering it unusable and charging you for not returning it.

 

I could be wrong, but I think Delta or Dell doesn't care if I return it or not. The Buyback amount was $175. I think they are advertising the $175 deduction just so those that haven't turned them in by 12/31 don't get surprised and complain when they see it deducted in their Feb paycheck.

I honestly don't know what they mean by 'rendered unusable'. I imagine no matter what, it will power up and I could use the off-line functions. I don't know if I can get software updates or continue to use it to connect to the internet. I assume the flight operations content will be wiped and it will be rendered unusable for flight operations.

If it's unusable, in regards to getting updates or connecting to the internet (or if it's somehow material that either Dell or Delta would rather have it than my $175) I'll wrap it up and send it in by the 31st.

If I can still use it to surf, and if it doesn't matter to Delta, I'd rather keep it.

 

I read it as they are going to brick the surface. It could be as simple as just wiping the hard drive to blank, but it's possible as part of the corporate program they are able to delete to system bios as well and make it completely unbootable.

You wouldn't be able to use it regardless, it's more a matter of how difficult it would be to get back to usable. Basically, my presumption is no operating system at the low end. If they weren't going to do that, they wouldn't have said unusable is my thought on it. They would have said removing company content.

Now, if you never connect to the internet again, you'd never know. But you'll find out what it is once you do. Basically, at a minimum you'd have to reinstall windows, likely with a new copy, in my opinion.

NP. You could always call and ask them if there's a way to do the purchase now or specifically what they will do to it... but other than that I'd send it back rather than risk paying for a paperweight.

 

That's what I'm going to do. It's probably going to save me $175. It would have been pretty lame waking up New Years Day to a blocked screen. Thanks again.
