Yellow Slip Question:

I’m in the two day bucket long call Th/Fr and I’m first in line. There’s one open two day rotation looks like I will get it. So, on Tuesday I put in a Yellow slip to be first in line for short call on Thursday. Im assuming the trip will instead go to the next guy in the 2 day bucket, as I will get my desired short call RAP. (I’m assuming they don’t get many people requesting to be put in short call)

Scheduling ignores my yellow slip request and instead assigns me the trip on long call instead of placing me on short call. Scheduler told me they cover the trips via long call first THEN look at the yellow slips for SC. Is this correct? I think it sucks, as someone else will probably get a short call RAP they don’t want and I’ve got a trip I don’t want. I’ll call DALPA later, it’s too early this AM.

They have always covered the trips first and then assigned shortcall. It would be great if they did it the other way around because as a senior reserve you could really manipulate trip assignments.

Scheduling is correct. Trips are covered first, then SC

If you're the least senior person eligible, and you got the thing you want least, it seems the system is working, no? I would almost always prefer a short call over a 2-day myself. If I were this next guy on the list who had to eat the trip because you YS a SC, I'd in fact be upset like you are now.

Those who prefer a trip over a short call can YS the trip. Had the next (more senior) guy wanted the 2-day trip you got tagged with, he would have YS it. In lieu of doing so, he's saying he'd rather take a SC.

Agreed. I'd always take a short call over a trip. System works the way it should.

Given that it seems scheduling is running the show the way it was designed, then I’m really not upset. I just wasn’t sure that was the case. Certainly agree with you that someone could have YS if they wanted. Since we are fat in my category, I think most just gamble that they won’t get either a trip or short call.
I was really just thinking most would rather not deal with the short call. You, like me, don’t mind it. If someone lived in Dallas and had to commute to NYC and buy a hotel for the short call, he might feel differently about it. Part of my thinking is based on the discussions about the change to 9 hour short call a couple months back. Almost everyone on APC was venting about how exceedingly onerous (to them) it is to be on short call.

I hear you. Personally, I've liked the change to 9 hour SC. I'm also an advocate of incentivizing pilots to bid for SC...one hour ABOVE the guarantee, whether used or unused. That rising tide would lift all boats: IMHO commuters would get fewer SC, line-holding would go more junior overall, the company might disperse SCs more cautiously, and we could see more green slips.

No automatic extensions?

I saw a Maddog rotation with the scheduling comments “WILL NEED TO COVER...REF ATL XXXX/5 TO PREVENT EXTENSION AND POSSIBLE GDP IN EWR”

It appears that scheduling/tracking is working to no longer assume you will extend. If so it’s about time.

It might be because the crew is unable to extend (2nd extension without 30hrs rest.)

StartngOvr 02-06-2019 01:26 PM

Maybe they were referring to extension into X days, rather than extension to the table B limits?
