Ya know what... applying seniority parameters to the reserve system will no more bankrupt this company than will giving us all the $100/month kumbaya bonus. LUV and Jblu do not "clean our clocks" because of the reserve system. That is utterly ridiculuous. We are a different animal than either of those 2 companies, and for alpa to pretend otherwise is disingenuous at best. Sure, we both fly airplanes, but that is where it ends. It is not OUR responsibility to pay for things. We are seniority based employees, and for the reason of "Son... you'll be senior some day".. it has been, and apparently will be continue to be allowed to abbrogate seniority to placate somebody's theory that seniority application to a reserve system will bankrupt the company. To quote Tim Bohan.. "Same as it ever was".
Edit addition: My complaint isn't necessarily with the whole reserve system either alfa... What burns my bagels is that retarded days of availability and how it relates to "yellowslipping" open time trips. THAT abrogates seniority big time, and is totally unsat. He makes good points. I also followed on that there are many things that can be improved for low or no cost. Reserve is no longer for those that are junior, and it is getting the attention that it deserves. I hate SC but I live in base. I cannot imagine commuting to it. I say credit a reserve pilot a daily SC credit for it. I have stated this before and will continue to state it. It costs the company nothing until you break guarantee. |

Anyone want to guess what the most surprising result of this AE might be?
My uninformed, first AE, intuition thinks MSP M88A will go pretty junior. Like 10,000. Maybe even 10,500. Yes, I'm bored. |
Call your reps with ideas. The reserve chatter always seem to come about when there is an AE. Given your input that is what they are there for. Better yet, go volunteer for the scheduling committee and see what goes in to it.

I would like to see it go junior to that. It is done btw. They stated today that it would be out on early on the first at the latest.

If I have one beef with our Reserve program, it's this: pilots with <300 hrs in a given airplane need to fly. One or two short trips per month on Reserve, IMO, isn't enough to lock in a good a/c habit pattern when you're new to the bird.
What do you, esteemed colleagues, think of not assigning reserve flying to pilots with <300 hrs in a given bird/seat? The pilots just above them on the seniority list would get the Reserve lines, but over time that'd become part of the cost of doing business wrt to getting new guys up to speed. |

I completely agree. Most guys on reserve don't want to fly. If someone does, let them. Years ago I was projecting over 30 in 7 in DTW. I was supposed to fly to the east coast and then MSP. A reserve was called out to fly the leg to the east coast while I DH'd. Then I was to fly to MSP while he DH'd. I asked him if he minded flying both legs so I could bail. Not only did he not mind, (he was new on the airplane and hadn't flown in weeks) but he preferred to do it. I called scheduling and their response was: you're getting paid to fly it so you have to fly it. No argument was going to change their mind. I sure felt rested after that DH (tic). What a stupid rule.

iaflyer, how do you figure? The seniority list is a zero sum game. EVERYONE can't move up!
How about this scenario? If the reserve system is made better, I agree that more senior people would bid it. But the entire category junior to that guy doesn't get to move up. Rather, the pilot who was on reserve on the 777B for example, will get bumped off to a lower piece of equipment, when this senior guy bids it. That bumps another guy off, etc. etc. So, in reality, everyone moves down but the one senior guy. Junior guys hosed again! ;) My scenario is just as silly as yours. In reality, when reserve quality of life gets better, it goes more senior, and it just takes longer for anyone to be able to hold even reserve on the bigger equipment. When I was first hired, it took me 8 years to hold 767B. Snap forward to today, and new hires were getting 7ERB. That's not because we were growing; it was quality of life on reserve. We make it much better and everyone their first 5 years will be on the M88B or DC9B. That's fine with me, we just need to realize that's what will happen. |

I agree Iceman49 but, as Leo Mullin was known to say, "a contracts a contract." Someone would complain that it was violated if the results are published before SOC. Denny |
