tag line ... "At XYZ Airlines, we don't believe in farming out your safety to the subcontractor with the lowest bid, who pays the cheapest wages, and hires the least qualified aircrew and mechanics. Instead, we've taken a new approach. We've decided to bring all of the flying back in house under our control, applying the same stringent rules and requirements for any XYZ flight. blah blah blah

I think it would cause the other majors to react accordingly.

Am I nuts?

Yep your nuts. For every person you got to fly on you with that approach you would lose 20 because XYX airlines had a 10 dollar cheaper fare. I deal in another job with moving people for vacations. The average traveler will go to unbelievable lengths to save 10 dollars in air fare after booking a 10,000 dollar vacation.
About 7 years ago Delta raised every fare across the board 10 dollars. Not one other airline matched. Delta decided to stick with the fare increase. They lasted 11 days. In that time they lost 200 million in revenue and bookings they never got back. People hate airlines and take it as a matter of pride that the beat the airline industry out of their last 10 bucks.

Hi Buzzpat,
I read some excerpts from your book, and truly enjoyed it. I confess, however, to the writer's cardinal sin of "browsing" thru it for almost 2 hours at the bookstore, and not buying it...thought I'd just check it out at the library. (Airline pilot to-the-core). What I wanted to comment on was your exemplary demeanor on praying for your old boss. In light of your experiences with Arkansas mafia, I find your position really refreshing, and admirable. Kudos on you. I hold no personal feelings for the guy one way or the other, and politically, I voted for Ross Perot in '92, if that tells ya' anything. I lived in AR for a few years, and Gov. Bill handed out diplomas at my H.S. graduation. Seems kinda' cool now. Hope his recovery goes well. In light of current events, he makes our current "guy" seem completely conservative by comparison, which is scary.

Chuck

Hey Chuck

Where'd you go to high school? Im a Jax High School grad. My dad was flying at Little Rock AFB.

You miss my point...
There are some things that might need a different approach than "siting at the table negotiating deals."
That hasn't worked out so hot...
When you listen to Roger Cohen of the RAA you'll hear him say "there can only be one regulator, because you couldn't have various carriers overseeing different standards, different rules"
Perhaps it's time as pilots we take a similarly systemic approach to the problem rather than piecemeal negotiations.

Of course they don't why would they.
Why is it that the ATA manages to be in bed with the FAA but as pilots we stand on the sidelines? Maybe its time to tackle some of these issues on a regulatory level. Perhaps it's our own pride and a false sense of professionalism that that holds us back.

FWIW I guess I know too little about the ALPA PAC to see much happening on that front... Or maybe they are working overtime but under the radar...

Not getting involved in this never ending rehash, but the former MEC Chairman's name is John Malone.

True statement. BTW, Tom Malone, John's uncle, used to be a 757/767 Sim Instructor. :)

Any relation to Sam "Mayday" Malone?

Probably.

If you mean the bosox drunk pitcher from the mid 70s?

You've got 2 men on base and their best batter up to bat who do you call? Mayday Malone and his Slider of Death! And what happened? 3-run homer. It was his teammates who called it the slider of death.

:D

They have almost always worked in my favor under the current rules. That is why I objected to the posting that Delta's RR rules suck. Read the RR section of the contract. Its a solid section that escaped the 1113 process mostly intact.

[b]When contract time comes I want the emphasis in area's that truly need help. Pay, Retirement, Reserve, Recovery flying ect[b]...

Scope should be at the front of the list however I will tell you upfront that I don't believe we can operate the CR series at a cost structure that is sustainable. I believe we can operate the E-170/175 at the mainline and was hugely against that change when Tom Malone and his MEC allowed it to happen. The scope focus should be on bringing that flying back over time to the mainline. Trying to scope smaller aircraft would just kill your ability to feed the system by forcing us out of most markets that can only sustain a smaller aircraft.

Sailing,

Why not start with the E-190 at Jet Blue rates? They max out at $143 which I believe is only $8 less than our DC-9 rates. If we can not do that profitably, and they can, we have a serious problem.

Scoop

$143? Wow. Our Captains on the Delta PWA top out at $107.67 at year 12 and 12 year FOs top out at $73.54. So JB gives their 1st year pilots roughly $25 more every year from year 1 then we negotiated for the same exact plane (EMB-190).

Funny, JB pays $1.43/hour per seat and we would pay $1.07/hour per seat. ASA on their 70 seaters at year 12 is $1.24/hour per seat. We range from $1.50/hr/seat on the DC9-30 to $0.52/hr/seat on 744.

If you paid our 744 top end CAs $1.43/hr per seat you'd pay $576/hr. Sounds fair to me! Using ASA's scale you'd pay $499/hr. Hell if you paid them $1.07/hr per seat like we have already set forth for the E190 then you'd pay 744 A's $431/hr. Well above $208/hr we pay 744 and 777 As now.

I think we should negotiate by seat per hour now and just say we at a minimum want Jetblue rates, or we might settle for regional rates but no lower... :D
