I'd like to hear about the reserve system from a guy who sits reserve on the 767ER, and lives in base. (Amazingly, I haven't flown with one yet.) It seems to me that int'l reserve would not be bad, IF you lived within a few hours drive of JFK. I'm guessing that, if you're on reserve in NY, most of your call outs will be to cover LGW, MAN, or DUB. Anyone?

I am coming over to the ER very soon, but I'll have a line. I live in the area and sat reserve on the -800 for a long time, so I'm used to it. The only qualms I had about reserve on the ER is the 24hr short call. But since most trips are in the afternoon it wouldn't be too hard to plan around that.
I would think on reserve you'd get more variety than what a junior line holder will have. A junior lineholder will definitely get Dublin, Manchester, LGW, etc. whereas a reserve guy will probably get lucky and go to Rome, Budapest, Moscow, etc. now and then. Or maybe they'll just go to Accra all month. ;) |

How bad would sitting reserve in NYC be for a guy that lives 1 hr from EWR and 1 1/2 to 3 hrs (depending on traffic) to JFK & LGA? How many short calls can you expect to sit in a month, and what defines short call? Thanks!

2/2 got offers on first Monday interviews
All,
Thanks for all the great info posted on this thread! I interviewed today (ok, yesterday now) with one other guy - we were both surprised that there was only 2 of us; explanation was the need for Monday interviewing (due to increasing class sizes?) was somewhat short-fused and others they tried to get in with us either couldn't adjust their schedules or they didn't get comms with 'em. Worked out for us though, since we both got the offer! I've got an availability date of 1 Sep (mil retirement orders date), so I may get lucky and join some of you expecting a September class date. I am THRILLED to be joining this organization at this exciting time - see you in the schoolhouse! Danimal |

When we started they said they would have 40 new hires a month until the end of the year. Then, before we finished indoc Delta said they are ramping up hiring to 50 a month through the end of the year. I think there are 75 new hires scheduled for August. The rumor is 75 a month through Nov. so they can take Dec off for the holidays. Then, they will ramp back up to 50 in Jan. You are getting in at the right time. See ya 'round the schoolhouse! A6danimal-
How long after you posted on airlineapps did it take to get the call for an interview? Did you have any help on the inside? Just wondering. I posted about 6 weeks ago. Congrats on the job! -P |
XRay,
Thats about the distance I live from JFK/LGA. I'm about 70 miles. Short Call is very easy here at Delta. Things GENERALLY go as planned, so its rare to get a same-day assignment. I did a lot of time on reserve here over the years and I can count my same-day assignments in NYC on one hand. Now in Atlanta its different since there are more possibilities down there and an ton more pilots. Most of my trips on short call were given out the day prior. On reserve, Fall and Winters are fairly quiet, and the spring and summers are crazy busy with short staffing and a chance to make some extra cash. Now for international, short call is 24hrs so theres probably a good chance of getting something. I don't know...haven't done it yet. For you guys getting hired now, I wouldn't sweat reserve...you guys won't be doing much of it the way things are going! Lucky bastards. ;) |
Lucky bastard here
Guard dude,
Your posts have been priceless, thanks again. Speaking of wicked crazy, I asked if I could hope for a September class date, and was told "well, maybe August ... when are you available?" That was yesterday, the 2nd day of my interview (med/psych day), after I took the MMPI. So hopefully I'll be seeing you around the campus shortly. P-funk, I had a friend of a friend on the inside, seemed to help, judging from the fact that I got my 3rd "errors on your app" email the same day I got the invite to interview. Guess I forgot to include my high school. Called and scheduled interview last week as soon as I read the email invite, then fixed my app. My app was first posted back in April, I think ... I was over in the desert so it was groundhog day everyday, forgive my non-specificity. The email invite to interview was dated 7/17. I didn't read it til the 24th (you have 10 days to respond or the offer is void), and when I called that day, they offered me the interview on the 30th. I would say that my experience gives some weight to Dude's rumor that they've ramped up to 75 hires a month. Danimal |
I was just informed by my guy on the inside that my app is in the "short stack" for final review before I'm invited.. Crossing my fingers.
I just hope if invited, I can get past the battery of technical tests they give. I have some of the old gouge, so I suppose it's as much as anyone else! best of luck to all.. DAL is the brass ring. I don't even have an app with UAL or NWA, as for me they're not in the same league. |
