A few people standing around with fire extinguishers during engine start would be very reassuring to passengers.

Do some leg work. If you know you are going to DH, go in to Travelnet, list yourself on the flight under the rotation and then take that confirmation number and go to Delta.com and change your seat. Unless it is oversold, I always have good luck.
I know that many are going to state that it is the companies job to fix this, but it is my duff that gets to live it. Therefore, I do what works for me. I am proactive with this stuff.

Scoop, I believe we have to have dutied in for the rotation and it has to be 45 minutes prior to the flight. There was an entire memo / bulletin on this. I'll look for it.

No - literally. They have plenty of room between Ted Williams' head and Walt Disney. In order to never furlough again (and lose those precious 76 seaters) the company will just put excess pilots in a deep freeze and thaw them out as required. Remember Hans Solo in Revenge of the Jedi - something like that.

Hey, I like FAT. Spent many years there. Heard a fat pax was ticked off when she saw her bag tag. FAT-PHK. I always wished I could fly from Wenatchee-Fresno-Yuma, then you'd need to go to ex-los angeles.........

How about the flying movie where the fire chief tells the pilot "everytime you come in the fire trucks go out!"
Said airplane was not in the movie, it was in another movie that ridiculed my former airline life in Cleveland, but, this airplane made you feel like everytime you came in, the fire trucks went out.

Yep. The one where the Captain was having "non-pertinent conversations" 
(I've heard rumors) with the flight attendant and trying to get the plane to climb faster so she didn't have to push the galley cart up hill. They ended up stalling out, the plane went 111 degrees over on roll and 67 degrees nose down, the FO threw out the gear and some where in there the prop seperated. They over ran the runway and there you go.
I flew not too many months ago with a Captain from the training department. He said the thing he's learned the most from doing requalls is don't do anything but watch the airplane during the climb and descent. I'll take him for his word.

You can get the record locator number and list yourself on Travelnet as soon as you get assigned the DH flight. You have to wait until 24 hours prior to departure to change your seat assignmnent. It's not a perfect system yet. I've tried changing my seat on the internet and it says there are no available seats when Travelnet shows 20+ open. Then I get to the airport and the kiosk will have a few seats to change into, and then you get to the agent and they have lots of options. I'm not sure how they release the seats into the kiosk system and the internet system so you can change them yourself, but they very rarely match. It's still a better way to try and get a better seat than begging the agent.
