The airlines have been in such a financial trainwreck the past seven years that they have been forced to stay lean to survive. This has meant a reduction of hiring during the good times and consequently they are lean enough where there is not much fat they can trim on the pilot side without a dramatic reduction in capacity. It could very well be that we skate through the worst economy since the depression with minimal if any furloughs. Those that are will likely be out for a much shorter time than those of us who had to go through the post 9/11 furloughs.

This is anecdotal stuff but my flights this month have been mostly oversold. Flying the 800 out of LA. Even had Halle Berry on my flight this morning. And, yes, she's very hot (and nice).

THERE ARE NOT PLANS TO FURLOUGH. Guys if it happens it will, and the decision has not been made, nor is it in the process of being made. Like I said a few moths ago. The next few months are key to the remaining part of our 09 Flight Plan. Fly smart and hope for decent booking. Everything I have been flying has been full. Future bookings are not as bad as they have been. What's the latest on the 777/737 deliveries? We're going to need them to absorb the 747-200 pilots. (I know NW guys can't go into the 777s, I just mean to absorb the loss of positions.) |

I spoke with a LCA at the start of Jan and he said he was "setting up the new hire program for this year." I pulled him aside and said "are they really thinking of hiring?" He said "yes, but nobody knew that oil would ever be above 100 dollars." I think that he was trying to say that the economy the deciding factor. If someone has a crystal ball that works. ask it what the economy is going to do.

My personal opinion is that the big displacement was meant to put the junior pilots on the 88 so that if they furlough they are not short staffing the ER in the summer time. Lets say the displacement did not happen and they furlough the bottom hundred or so, they would be shorting a category that tends to be short in the summer to begin with. Bad move. Maybe they did all this displacing to make a fulough hurt them less. Just a thought.
