To NWA pilots:

I heard a lot of good things about NWA commuter policy. I was told it is nearly no stress whether you make a flight or not as long as you have a back up, call scheds and they work with you, positive space if in a bind etc.

Could someone with experience describe how it works, please.

I sure hope Delta will adopt it ASAP.

Thanks and happy new year!

If you are out on Mil leave greater than 6 months you can go to any category as long as someone junior to you is in the category. Then the two years starts from the day you started your military leave. (Personal Experience) I bid from the 88 to the 767 domestic and since the time was greater than six months I was able to change to the 767ER category.

You can only go to a category where a pilot junior to you got a bid on a aircraft in that category while you were on Mil leave. Its not anywhere that a pilot is junior to you. The concept being if you were not on MIL leave you could have bid that position.

The "Call in Honest" policy is great. Give yourself two flights that get you in for your trip. If you don't make it on the first one, call scheduling and they check to make sure you didn't give them bogus flights. Everything checks good, you get a positive space seat to work. It's a great policy, takes most of the stress out of commuting.

wow, that's really nice, the way it should be

And just to add........the "primary" can be off line. So if I don't get on an (ie) American flight, I can call in honest for the NWA back up, and it doesn't matter if it's NWA, Compass, Mesaba or Pinnacale.

Our jumpseat guys say this is all being discussed. You guys don't have a commuter culture so it's hard getting a common frame of reference, but we're getting there.

I hope it survives too, it is a great stress reliever.

Ferd

PS..........but, alas, it only works going to work......not home

I know Ferd, I hope it survives too.:( We've lost all our DC9s out of STL, and it's getting tough trying to make it to work on CRJs.

Delta management doesn't have a "commuter friendly" history.
It hasn't been that long ago we couldn't even ride our own jumpseats.

Positive space commuting has a cost. They'll probably make us bargain for it.

Without a doubt. But, the way we sold it years ago was they were trying to cut down on sick calls. Prior, everyone called it "callin in stupid". Called and you got a failure to commute and lost the trip. So, everyone just called in sick if things got tight. Also, they figured out that the cost of one positive space pass was cheaper than a delayed or cancelled flight due to no pilot. Delta looks like they carry more reserves so I guess we'll see.

If the company thought it was a good idea, I'm sure it would be done already. So, your right.........we'll see.

The demographics of how Delta pilots commute would make it hard. NWA pilots tend to come from a lot of different locations to MSP/DTW. They don't swamp specific flights. Delta pilots who commute tend to be in groups. Orlando to NYC, Dallas to Atlanta, Atlanta to NYC, Boston to NYC, DC to NYC. Its not unusual to have 50 plus commuters on a DFW flight counting flight attendants. I can't see Delta bumping all the flight attendants and revenue passengers to give PS to 20 pilots. Its a culteral thing about treating all employees the same. They would have to extend the policy to the flight attendants and the numbers on some flights would be staggering.
