Ferd

How many hours did you get as a FAIP in that thing, Ferd?:D:p

Sounds like a really great reunion with a cool toy to play with to boot. Nice!

In 2001, it was United and how their junior guys were blessed because they were making 777 right seat in a couple of years. Now those same guys are coming up on 9+ years on furlough with not much hope for recall any time soon. I have heard this about American, Northwest (before the merger), and just about every startup. The grass is always greener.

Alfa,

I agree that it is unwise to take a "snapshot" of the current conditions and extrapolate them over a projected career, but it has now been over 10 years that guys would have been better off at other airlines - that is significant.

I guess the same holds true for the 400 seat jet 747 reserve captains.

Sad but true. We have eroded over the years to pathetic levels. Not too long ago, Delta was the place to be. Now...even most of my buddies at regionals does not care for a DAL job. For many of them DAL is a place to go if SWA, AMR (heavy retirements), FedEx, UPS etc does not work out. Can't blame them.

They could have an enormous year and years to come, they've got awesome draft pick after awesome draft pick but Stafford breaks down easier than my old Dodge Intrepid. It's a nice ride when it works which isn't all that much and that's costly.

I hope DTW does really well for no other reason than it's fun to watch bad teams get good, but since you brought it up, your QB in his gawga collegiate days:

Dudes a winner! Hot girl, beer, can out eat anybody at Golden Corral, good quarterback at Gawga despite being uncoached, and about to be really rich! So what does he do?

Ferd is right, football talk is not aviation related. So let me make it a little more aviation related:

True, but what I think most are trying to point out here is; We will have the retirements coming so furloughs are a straw man. What people are really concerned about is a merger that will cause the movement that should finally be coming result in the loss of a 767A seat or greater. How the list "may" be done will have severe ramifications on the one thread of hope pilots have been able to hold on to; career expectations.

I think you hit the nail on the head with the last hope being career expectations. With the departure of 150+ this year coupled with no hiring, not to mention hundreds retiring very soon and still no mention of hiring troubles me to say the least. I have even considered taking my 20+ remaining years to another company. I have never given that a thought up until now, even through an extended furlough. I really am coming to believe this company will continue to merge, shrink and outsource throughout all of our retirements, rendering the junior career expectations, just that expectations that never come to fruition. Granted some hiring will have to occur but just keep in mind that I have seen in the neighborhood of 3000-4000 pilots leave since I was hired and I am still beyond 80% on the list. Merge, shrink, outsource...repeat and so on....

I hope I am wrong but sadly I think I am right. One thing is for sure. If other good opportunities present themselves in the near future, I think you may see many depart who aren't even close to retirement. Even looking through my rose colored lenses, the optimism has faded.:(

As we were joking of the 6000+ yard QB and the 16-0 Lions, you're spot on if the trend continues unabated.

You'll have a guy spend 30 years at Delta sitting 95% the whole way and displaced up the fleet as the bottom of the fleet was retired. But he'd probably not go all the way to the 777/744 area because those will come down to meet him probably around the 763.

Sarcastic I know. But if we drew the line out.
