It is the Captain's switch by tradition here.
In recent years there has been a movement on the MD-88 and some 737-800 bases toward the FO actuating the beacon. Some are doing it now as a matter of course without asking prior permission. It has caused a couple of crews to get in hot water with the beacon running and the airplane nowhere close to pushback, and it has caused some intra cockpit "CRM" discussion. In any case, as it's the pay switch, it's the Captain's call. The beacon should be turned on in reference to the pushback checklist after the push clearance has been given....... |

Calling for push, then running a checklist, then telling the tug driver to push is a stupid procedure. It's all to save Delta a few minutes per leg while we are in charge of a closed up aircraft but not getting paid.

You are getting paid. For every 3.5 minutes during the rotation you are credited with one minute of flight pay, flying or not. For every 2 minutes during your daytime duty day, you're getting one minute of flight pay. You're not just getting paid when the beacon is on. |
Never mind. My post only proved there are 12,750 opinions on the topic and one procedure.

Aw, it's just a flesh wound! He's not dead, yet! Ya know, Ferd, for an Air Force guy you show an unusually broad perspective. You probably never were in SAC or made O-5, huh...:p I think I'll like flying with you! |
Supposedly the stupid beacon trigger may be going away after all this merger stuff is done. Absolutely rediculous and definitely saves the company money. Should be like NWA...drop the brake and reset it with the doors close and you're on the clock.
Cleared for chock removal, I'm on the clock. |
