Flight Ops would be irresponsible if they didn't pay some attention to those demographics when hiring. All other things being roughly equal, the younger applicant is going to have an edge this time around. Not for any reason of age discrimination but just because Delta has to smooth out the retirement curve in order to maintain continuity in the operation.
They can't have half the pilot group all retiring within a couple years of each other.
Maybe. But even if they purged all age related computer and human biases and considerations entirely, they are still going to end up with a sizeable split. For an airline that prides itself on riding the leading edge of being selective/picky with their applicants, I really doubt there will be a focus on younger pilots. That said, they will end up with many regardless because the pool is filled with them anyway.

Not true. BUT! If you have higher time you need to make yourself stand out. A 10000 hour applicant who was a check airmen will get the call before the 10000 hour straight line pilot.

Higher hours of time in the same capacity at an advancing age statistically makes training more difficult, hence there is likely no added benefit of having 10,000 TPIC vs 1000 TPIC. It's all part of their targeted selection thing.

With that said, with all things being equal, the line check airman with 1500 TPIC and a Masters degree will get the call before the Foursquare Mayor of the Fort Wayne Best Western with 10,000 hours of CRJ left seat time.

As a business owner, I would never hire someone without seeing their work first. So they would either have to have some stellar accomplishments or lots of recommendations from my other employees.

Would that still be the case if you interviewed every employee exactly the same, had done so maybe 25,000 or 30,000 times, and you had a fairly precise data set on the performance of those you'd extended job offers to?

I've never heard this from anyone at Delta, but I see it spread on the internet all the time. I think it is a rumor invented by high-time guys that know they are unlikely to be hired for some other reason, so that they can blame their failure on some external bs.

Some follow up--completed recs do show up and can be read and there is also a delete button...I guess if you don't like what they say.

Guys

The only bottom line for Delta pilot hiring...are you qualified (meet the mins), are you professional in your manner and your appearance, and "would I want to fly a four-day with you?, e.g., are you normal and a good guy/gal. High time, low time, military, civilian, etc, are sorta the icing. If Delta interviews you, you are nominally hired unless you blow it. Don't blow it.

Good luck Fisher! It's a great company with great guys that are fun to fly with. Study hard, look the part and be yourself. What makes it such a cool place to work is that the guys and gals you'll fly with are cool! I can't emphasize that enough. And be honest! One thing that will ruin it for anybody is less than complete honesty. Mess up, fess up! It goes a long way at DAL.
