DAL Poolie Info

Well actually, we DO have an intercom on the 73. The problem is most Captains I fly with (can't speak for other FO's) won't use it. There's a switch on the yoke and one on the comm panel by your outboard thigh. Not that hard to use really, but most don't like it. What we don't have is "hot mic". The newest 900's do, but I doubt there will be a retrofit.
I am a year 1 guy, so I use the free headset with an earplug in my headset ear, and a loose one in my "Captain" ear. It's not crazy loud, but some phases of flight are worse than others. Add a lot of "senior" pilots (great guys, though, and I hope to live that long), and you end up with some loud conversations...

I didn't know that, thanks for the correction.

I am unsure who has gotten invites for the next May class. I assume most of March will get that class. If you have info, let me know.

on the 73n......the telex 850 provides marginal NR. It has impedance matching issues with a number of airframes....you may find yourself unable to transmit, receive, or both..... with no prior indication.
writing this up will result in a mtc sign off of 'pilot used non delta issued headset.' and it is not fixed.
this difficulty seems to be aggravated if both crew members are using 850s.
once you have to fly a 5hr leg with a pack inop....fl 250 @ 330kias.....you will realize how useless the 850 nr really is...once your head stops pounding.
if you entertain ever being on the 73n......get a state of the art active nr headset.
and unless you think safety is not compromised by being unable to communicate with other crewmembers....use the hot mike switch (if installed) or a mechanical device at least from taxi to toc and again from tod to block in.
the 727 was even louder than the 73n.....my hearing is shot, and I have significant tinnitus. wish this technology had been there when I was in your shoes.
The noise levels in the boeing are hazardous to your hearing and effective function as a crewmember. as an aside....the greatest noticeable impact of using active nr on the 727 was how much less fatigued I was at the end of the day.

After sitting in indoc for two weeks, class 16-10 discovered the new hire guide. Definitions, pay discussion, most of the topics that we talked about over beers each night.
The new hire guide is on DeltaNet, so you have to have your employee number, which for me arrived the Saturday before day-one Monday. Once you get DeltaNet access, the new hire stuff can be located by clicking on "Admin" on the Flight Operations department page (bottom left side in a list of clickable tabs). On the Admin page, there is a "New Hire" tab on the right side of the page.
I wish I'd had those documents when I started training.

I remember my days as an FE on the 727...I used to get to the layover hotel and just collapse on the bed, completely exhausted. It wasn't until I went to the MD88 that I realized it was the noise level on the 72 that was causing the fatigue.
