I'm not a crew resources guy but the md88s are slowly being phased out with several retiring in the next 3-5 years.
We currently have about 135 737s and still have another 60-70ish rolling off the assembly line. So mix of retire 88 and some ERs and growth of 73N fleet. Not sure of the planned #s but the category is growing and there is much rejoicing. I doubt a relatively new hire would have enough seniority to bid in to the category when it is first advertised this fall but I still don't think it'd take that long to get there. Msp is pretty senior so it won't move lightning fast like 73N NYC (plug to <60% in less than a year).
During walk around you can eat off the landing gear and wheel wells of the new 900s. 88s not so much...trust delta will squeeze every last drop of blood from them. They make the company a ton of money.

SD said that MD88s will start to leave in three years. Not maybe, not contingent on, not should, but will. That seems a pretty declarative statement to me. Regardless, looks like the right deal just presented itself!

Yep. His roadshow was my source on the 88 timeline.

From: Going to hell in a bucket, but enjoying the ride .
Just remember, "The five year plan" changes every three weeks!

Hey, let's open a 777 base in NYC!
Now let's move it to DTW!
Now let's put it in LAX!
Now let's buy some used E190's!
No, let's buy some C100's!
Yeah...that's the ticket... this week.

The slides for the roadshow are on Delta net. Note however that 2020 and 3 years from now are about the same thing. SD was asked detailed questions about the 88 fleet at the roadshow I was at. The retrofit for both ADSB and GPS plus a better FMS has been finalized and funded. The only question was if they do the entire fleet or retire 30 of the oldest without the mods. That was dependant on finding replacement aircraft for the right price. He implied it would be used 737's or Airbus 320's unless a screaming new deal showed up. Talked about a narrow body bubble starting to happen when the NEO and max ramp up deliveries. Service life on the 88's is 40 years verses 30 for the Boeings and Airbuses. The C100 order is not tied to the 88 replacement.
Edit: 37 additional A321's announced. That is probably what will drive parking the 30 MD88's.

Hi Everyone,
Firstly, thanks for the great advice/info on this thread. Got the CJO a few weeks ago but won't be starting until mid-late July because of my current contract.
When my time comes (if I actually end up getting a choice), any advice on which aircraft/base to go for if my only goal is to end up in LAX? I don't care about what I fly or how long I'm on reserve. Just want to be based there. Does it even matter what I pick? Am I just dreaming of some far away never-land that I should just forget about for now?
Thanks again!

Here is my favorite source to help with what jet you pick. It lags actual seniority by about 2 months but is a very nice big picture overview: Pilot Relative Position

MSP is Delta's *****. There is a lot of bad blood between Delta and MN after the merger and varying perceptions about Delta's fulfillment of its obligations (or lack therof). MN is not a business friendly state. Unless you speak whatever language they speak in Somalia. Couple that with the ability to utilize sick leave to care for eligible family members, and MSP will always be a backwater, stagnant, ultra-senior base. If you don't live there now...find a way to drive to work in ATL, NYC or SEA. Ymmv
