The exception to both is if you bid to a new category. In that case, the seat lock does not apply.

New category as in any other airplane that was not offered in INDOC?

A new fleet type or a base that currently doesn't have a current aircraft. So, the E190s will be fair game for all new hires on their seat locks. If they added the 88 to SEA, for example, that would be biddable, too.

A more practical example would be the MSP 73N category Crew Resources is hinting at.

Also if you get displaced out of your seat, you can bid to any aircraft/base that your seniority can hold and not incur a seat lock.

I like it! If you're a 4 Apr guy or earlier, I nominate you to plan it. Anyone second the motion? Say aye!
Uh oh...opened my mouth ...I hope to be in the April 4th or 11th class...

Don't you remember the 3 rules of all good military pilots?

- Don't ever crash.
- Don't ever volunteer for deployments that involve sand or end in "stan".
- Don't ever volunteer to plan the squadron Christmas party. (Granted this ain't a squadron Christmas party, but it's close enough.)

Ok, that needs some explaining. If you're senior enough to hold a line on a plane you can get bumped off the airframe??? If that's correct, how often does that happen?

(BTW, all you quiet types out there owe me a coke for asking all these questions!)

Another way to break a seat lock is to bid an upgrade.

Yup....it is a one tine good deal for your first Captain upgrade. Remember though, you do carry any prior training committment with you and that gets added to your 2 year Captain upgrade. There are at least two guys in NYC who had nearly 4 years of seat locks - one was awarded NYC330 F/O and then bid NYC717 Captain a month or two later and another was awarded NYC717 Captain and then bid NYC A330 F/O the next AE (not seat locked because the NYC330 was still considered a new category at the time).

So.....really 4 ways to break a seat lock - Mandatory Displacement (no training committment); Voluntary Displacement (training committment); New category (training committment) and First-time Captain upgrade (training committment).

It would only apply if the company was shrinking/closing your base/aircraft. Right now the company is saying that the E190's will be on the west coast. There is the possibility of the LAX 717 catagory shrinking or closing.

If you were a LAX 717 pilot, you could bid for any catagory your seniority could hold. I wouldn't worry about it at all if you are eventually going to be ATL based.
