I’ve heard that the company is tight on reaching their annual goal of keeping non-fuel cost increases to 2% or less. It would not surprise me at all for them to put themselves in a very tight staffing pinch in order to wait until after the beginning of the year to incur costs associated with new hires in Flight Ops.

They did the same in 2012.

Yeah, and look at the problems that led to..... Not insurmountable but sure was lucrative for a bunch of pilots.

Save a bunch of money "on paper" only to have to pay it out in reality later, all to meet some self-created spreadsheet goal. Great.

The goal was a specific number of profitable quarters to improve our debt rating and reduce interest expense.

"Whisper" (used without permission of Capt Bob Adomi) from Flight Ops meeting said no new hire classes for Sept or Oct.

Hired 525 pilots so far in 2018.

Need another approx 260 for summer 2019 ops manning requirements

From that, my edu-macated guess would be for classes to start again in Nov, with roughly 60 noobs per month. That would put the last group of 60 starting in Feb 2019 and being on the line NLT May'ish to be full up for summer ops.

Best of luck to everyone waiting.....keep the faith...big D is a great place to work!

That’s the point. We didn’t hire during that time and got behind the manning power curve.

During C2012 I seem to remember SD saying we would need to start hiring soon or something to that effect. Then the company wanted to impress Wall Street by having X amount of profitable quarters and that delayed the projected hiring. The company achieved its goal but at the expense of falling behind on manning.
