Virtual bases are one of those things thats initially sounds good when you are a commuter. But, when you get into the possible negative permutations, it seems like a pandoras box of not so good deals.

The company wants it, what does that tell you? Yeah.
The bean counters see every DH as wasted money, and requiring more crews. Eliminate 50% of the DH by opening virtual bases, like JFK for all the 777 departures out of there, and you have just eliminated the need for many 777 pilots, and for the remaining 777 pilots, cut their pay per trip, as the DH legs go away on front and back of the trips.
Kills two birds for the company; less wide body pilots required, and less pay per trip for the ones remaining.
Now do the same thing with the 747's. Now the A330's. Starting to smell the synergy?
It's Win Win, but for them only.

You are right, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably isn't good for US!

Then they were like..."what was I thinking?"
Some bid right back out. They gave away their credit time and positive space commute...boom...whoops.

Look at the deal the DTW 777 pilots have. Not a single trip will originate in DTW this summer. They get positive space to and from their trips and 10:30 minutes extra pay on each trip. Any questions why the company wants virtual widebody international bases?

The company establishes bases, controls the schedule and operates small fleets. Their decisions, their problem, of their own making. Next week they will change it again.

Sounds like there's a consensus.
If its done the way management wants, virtual bases would suck.
We've given them tons of "productivity" concessions in the last few contracts.
Not again. Not this time.
