New Hire here, starting in the Sep. 20th class and I have a few questions. If you are based in NYC how much flying do you do at each airport? Do certain aircraft types do more flying out of JFK than LGA? I would be a commuter just wondering how people handle getting back and forth from all the airports to their crash pads. Thanks
When NYC based on reserve you cover all three airports, but able to name one as your primary base(say LGA), so if called to another airport(JFK/EWR) you will be allowed more time to get to it. I think people based out there will pool together for transportation. I'm sure someone will chime in with more detailed info.
Congrats and Welcome Delta.

My experience thus far has been Day 1 of reserve I get a trip or short call. Once I'm in base they usually find something for me to do. My experience on reserve has been a busy one, but I'm on the 320 and we are short staffed which is why it's going to newhires. We need more people on it. The opposite extreme is the ATL M88 category or MSP M88 category. Those reserve guys have been sitting on their thumbs doing squat so experiences will vary, but it is possible to sit around on long call reserve and work very little. Guys on ATL 767 were working about 6 days a month last year.

Johnso how do you like the A320? I just got off active duty AF (C-21s then C-5s) and was looking at our choices A320, MD-88, DC-9. I have buddies that flew the Med-Evac C-9s so I know all about it. I'm inclined to put the A320 at the top.

cni,
Having flown the DC9 and A320, I would definitely put the Airbus at the top of the list. IMO, simple to fly with a very good FMS. DC9, easy to fly but labor intensive, no FMS, basic autopilot but remember, you're vector equipped. Didn't fly the Maddog but it looks pretty good when compared with the DC9 (numerous jumpseat observations).
Welcome aboard.

I'm on the ER in NYC as well and hired about the same time as iaflyer. Like him most of my flying has been out of JFK but I've done several trips from EWR and a few from LGA.
I drive in so I don't have a crash pad. EWR is a lot closer for me and the others that live this way. The trips from there are popular with the guys living in NJ, PA and DE so when I had a line I couldn't get them. Now I'm on reserve and see a lot of Africa and Guyana I just got back from another trip to Georgetown and I'm hoping that the mosquitoes that made all these bites on me didn't have malaria.
Welcome aboard!
