For all the guys that wear sweaters, how do you like them vs. the blazer? and are they pretty warm or do they become unbearable at times? I know some airports keep the heat pretty high, and on top of that wearing the white shirt under it seems like it can make it pretty warm. I personally don't like being blazing hot but I was looking into getting one.

It let me, believe it or not, which works out ok for me. I'm in an odd situation in that I live in one base and got based in another for the remainder of the month, so saw an opportunity to drop the out of base reserve to pick up some garbage lines in base, saving myself the cost of dealing with a commute and whatnot.

Are leather jackets allowed?
I've seen photos of our pilots in hats, yet I don't recall seeing any guys in the airport wearing them. Are hats coming? Or staying away?

Yes, leather jackets are allowed. They're expensive, and I have a hard time justifying it myself. We do receive $240 a year to use at Crew Outfitters which would cover about 1/2 of that. Not sure how it works for new hires though because of the initial uniform investment

The initial uniform allowance will cover 1/2 of the complete uniform, EXCEPT for the leather jacket or sweater- those have to be paid in full by the pilot.

50% of the uniform is covered for new hires, plus the $240 at crew outfitters. But what is considered first-issue uniforms, as in number of pants, shirts, and ties?
Also, since 9E still has paper, one will need a flight kit it seems. Is there a more cost-effective alternative other than the $200 (or slightly under) for the leather ones, considering it will only be used for about +/- a year?

You will have plenty to study when you get to ground school. Starts at indoc. Learn the FOM! Then once that test is done, worry about systems. It's a building block theory. If you start at the top, it won't make as much sense and you will be trying to relearn it. Once you have the systems down, we want you to learn the profiles and procedures. Then you get in the sim and finally learn the plane. BUT, if you show up to the sim and don't have the other stuff down, your life just got really hard, and your days off just disappeared. You will be spending all your time doing make up Sims on days off. Remember, you can be worked 6 on 1 off if you are struggling.
Do those coming in with experience on the CRJ seem to have an advantage, because they're familiar with plane? Or a disadvantage because they think they know it all and actually they have deficiencies they need to realize and work on?
Also, in another post you said people need to be good on basic IFR knowledge- can you elaborate on some specifics? What sort of weaknesses are you seeing that could be shored up before arriving?

Lots of flight kit options. A popular one is from Office Depot I think, lots of those hanging around the crew lounges recently. I think someone said it was like $40.

Hats are optional according to our contract. For some reason the new hires all seem to have them, even though they don't have to. Among people who have been here a while hats are pretty rare, I'd guess 1-2% wear the hat. Are they going to be mandatory at some point? Who knows. If the company gives the union something to change the contract, then yeah, they'll probably become mandatory. Until then, do what you want. I find the hat to be a major pain.
