Yes it's a hidden network and your company iPad is pushed a special activation code that allows your iPad to automatically connect passing through 10,000. If I recall correctly from when we did the trial here, it was a hidden network called "AA-Flight Deck". AA pays for their pilots to have that feature on their iPads. Envoy, not so much. Keep in mind that if you ever encounter any bad turbulence that causes injuries, severe turbulence write up, or any other adverse incident, there's a turbulence survey you can fill out. I believe it's found in Mobile CCI. There's a response there asking if you feel like inflight WSI access could have prevented the turbulence encounter. If they get enough of those, it might make them think twice about providing it.

I’ve always wondered why you couldn’t use it for long range weather info in 121. If it’s an FM1 thing, fine. In the king air world I could use stratus for knowing what was out there an hour an a half ahead of me and the nose radar for what’s happening now. Certainly not controlling (stratus) but any info is good to have when making decisions.
Oh well.
Oh well.
But it is just one of many tools that could add so much situational awareness. Between weather and positive ID of traffic besides just a TCAS blip.
