Not taking a side either way & just gonna throw this out there…There’s now Federal case law where employees in non right to work states don’t have to pay union dues and still can maintain employment and if fired afterward, can sue all parties for wrongful termination. See link:

I think a lot of the issue has to do with a lack of transparency on the part of the union. Everyone expects that from Envoy, but it seems like the union knew a lot more about what was going on and why and chose to keep the pilots in the dark.
