They seem a bit timid on folks with long gaps recently. They used to hire anyway if the person was HTFO or DEC, but due to significant training and on-the-line issues, they seem to prefer folks with recent training or employment experience. I say that as someone with a gap myself who made it through - but saw many who struggled.

Right now they're hiring 1,500 OTS folks, not sure how much prior experience would factor into desirability. Captain wise I think Envoy is good. Also, AA will not hire you from one of their wholly owned regionals unless it's through flow, which is around 7 years right now.

Prior 121, 424 hours ERJ. I’ve interviewed with envoy twice and was offered a CJO and passed captains review board. For similar reasons (kids, college, etc) I was not able to make the jump back into the airlines. Situation is now different, empty nester. I applied to Envoy in March and got the “apply again in six month” email.
What would improve my chances of getting an interview in November?
-continue to update airlineapps?
-get my ATP CTP done? ATP wasn't required when i flew with expressjet before.
i have 15 years until age 65. Goal is to fly Envoy until retirement. Thanks all!

in case you missed it, Envoy is receiving an additional 33 aircraft in 2026-2027. That’s on top of the remaining deliveries this year which is about 1 per month. Just to staff those aircraft (not including attrition/flow) is 350+ pilots. Growth is a good problem to have.
There is definitely a captain shortage. Ask any CA on reserve during the last few months. There have been weekly junior mannings. Plenty of airport reserve, but expect to fly and not sit much.
More sim instructors have been hired recently. As pilots flow to AA or move on elsewhere, there are also more check airmen being signed off.

Captain shortage? Yes. No RSV day trading or dropping...Junior Manning is a definite possibility. If your a high time FO who wants to upgrade fast, then, as a junior Captain, you can expect mostly sitting Airport Ready Reserve for well over a year if you're in ORD or DFW. Even if you're awarded a RAP line, they will still send you to the airport to sit. You will not even be able to sniff a hard line for at least 2 years. Ask me how I know. Other than than that, Envoy is a good company to work for, and no, AA will not hire you outside the flow unless you check boxes that they need checked to maintain certain levels of internal diversity requirements.

How many hours per day is airport ready reserve?
What is the most junior base for Captains?
why in your view is there a captain shortage?

ORD is junior.
Key variable is FO’s senior to you upgrading - get ready for a year or longer riding the very bottom in ORD.
I don’t know how they are handling 950 hour applicants these days. They aren’t keen on DEC’s now and they may view a 950 FO who can bid for upgrade (and get it) immediately as something similar. Who knows, though!
