What comes first, the chicken or the egg? No new FOs, no new aircraft. No new aircraft and a promise of lowered upgrade times no new FOs.
Can’t get staffing unless there is a commitment from the legacy on a future. Look at what was happening with Endeavor or Envoy/Eagle before. Both were having major staffing issues a few years ago until their major partners made commitments to their futures. Once that was evident staffing improved, to the point that Endeavor now has a long wait for class dates.
Much of the staffing issue at xjt would have taken care of itself with a real commitment by UAL to future growth.

Staffing has never been a concern of UAL, nor of regionals other than ExpressJet. You bid on the flying even if you can’t staff it. So what if you cancel flight or have horrible performance numbers for a bit? As GoJet showed, it works. You get low upgrade times and eventually new pilots show up to staff the flying. The poor performance is forgiven and you get additional flying.
As for staffing the 550, that was an airframe designed to keep GoJet around. It just as easily could have been more -145 flying and, if the plug was pulled on GoJet by UAL the staffing would have come to ExpressJet. It wasn’t and ExpressJet will probably continue to have issues with staffing. Yes, hiring numbers have improved and hopefully will continue. But hope is not a method.

Plus United gets 49.9% of XJTs profits back. The biggest part often unmentioned or forgotten. And they can use Delta’s strategy of setting the benchmark with a low bid and allow the whipsaw to thrive.

Delta cared a lot about Comair. But once Comair got to the point it became bad business, Delta had no choice but to close them.
