Only what, 250 or little more/less have been hired and are out of training? I doubt all those Pilots are the Pilots you’re referencing, some sure absolutely because XJT desperately needed bodies. Now that classes are mostly full, that’s no longer practiced. I’m sure there will still be guys/gals who need a few extra sims and they’ll work with those who especially have a good attitude and make progress but for the most part I hear they’ll work with people up to a certain point and if they still can’t cut it, “appreciate the effort but it’s not working out”.

desperation to hire = you'll take applicants that nobody else will.
This translates to a huge time suck. They use up 2-3 times as much sim time, instructor time, LCA time, etc. Meanwhile, the training curriculum stretches to 4,5,6 months for everyone. Then, most of these pilots get fired (forced to resign, same thing) and take their ATP, type, and Sheraton points when they leave. Thanks for the free breakfasts!
Higher quality applicants = finish training on time, less work load on sim instructors and LCAs, better overall culture.

Now in the past 2018 this was true. Many folks over 100hrs of OE.

I don't think I have EVER heard XJT training is too demanding.
Challenging? Yes.
My last experience was almost fun.
In the past I've thought: "That's it? I way overstudied." Or: "Well, they let that go, but I know I did it and not to do it, so I suppose that's why...or maybe they just missed it."
Of course, that may be a lack of self awareness. And it's not a humble brag either.
But RARELY, *IF EVER* have I thought: "This is too hard."
It's not exactly handholding IMHO, but it's not that stressful either.
Challenging, good learning. As long as you study, IMHO, a reasonable amount.
