agree, but a better career field does. Yeah, everything is in shambles now, but think how much quicker most everything else will recover. It's just too volatile if you've got a family. I wasn't implying pride would be the reason not to go.

Entirely possible that UA is looking to make a public example of somebody, just to put the scare in other contractors and even mainline employee groups. Nothing is as sobering as the liquidation of a seniority-based employer.

To your point... C5 vs. EV will barely be a drop in UALs bucket of red ink either way. I kind of suspect they already know what they're going to do and are just building up to it for dramatic impact.

It is a deliciously diabolical plan. They save a few pennies, get rid of some feed they don't need and break the back of pattern based bargaining in the process. All it takes is one domino.

Are they really making a sink about this just to get XJT to match C5 pay scale? Seems like chump change. I would think no more ATP-CTP classes and new hire sign on bonuses will save $25k right there.

They want to shut down an airline over $4 pay difference? What gap are they trying to really close?

$4? Try $70 at C5 compared to $105 at XJT. That looks like $35 between the 2 airlines. Average pay at C5 is 5th year pay and the average pay at XJT would be $105 at maxed out pay. Also, vacation and other benefits play into that.

That would be about $3000 a month per pilot at 85 average hours.

They haven't been profitable in over a decade if you believe the accounting. United basically owns XJT and it's not a publicly traded company so they really don't need to be profitable to stay in business. Whether XJT pilots agree to concessions or not, UAL is still getting cheap labor from them. Is it cheaper than C5? No, but is it worth the headache and money it will take to get C5 to the size of operation they need it to be? That's the question.

United is like a big general contractor and XJT is it's ****y little paint company that the contractor owns. In normal times, United is still making a ton of money off of XJT even if XJT is "not profitable". If they wanted to make XJT profitable they could just pay them more for the job they do, then all of the sudden the business they own 50% of (most likely all of) is profitable. Doing that would hurt the whipsaw though so it's just easier to keep XJT "unprofitable" and United just keeps making the $ on the other end.

If you actually believe that the XJT labor groups taking pay concessions is going to make or break United and that United is only doing this because they are in "survival mode" and trying to save as much cash as possible, then I have a some ocean front property in Wyoming to sell you.

Too true. They're gonna pay hundreds to retire early and collect up to $250k a year for the next 3 years. And they're worried about how much we cost? Something else is going on, I just can't fathom what it is.

Well, that’s Scott Kirby’s specialty.

Now would be a great time to petition the NMB for a single transportation system determination between ExpressJet and CommutAir.

XJT has already been chosen as the survivor.

United wouldn't have asked for concessions from XJT to match C5 if they didn't want XJT. Think about it. If it TRULY was all based on costs, United would just shut down XJT and grow C5 when needed.

This is what is happening - United is using C5 as a pawn to get XJT to take concessions. Once this occurs, C5 will shut down (as already planned).
