You're thinking short term, as if what we dealt with in 2020 is how it always used to be. It used to be that it was a car ride of a few hours from CAN-HKG, or a quick flight in the AM or PM on KA (or a quick train ride if you deviated). Even now, as much of a PIA as it is to start a trip, it’s WAY quicker to fly HKG crews into SIN/TPE/KIX/NRT then a 12 hour flight from SFO.
Also, they can’t just close the base next week and say “Ok, you guys are all OAK based as of next month!”. There has to be a bid, new training, etc. Again, by the time that was even done I think many of the travel restrictions won’t even exist. It would just make the whole thing expensive and pointless.

The coronavirus is ultimately only one aspect of several that affect the base. One other is that China is making it much more difficult for all types of companies to do business in HK. That change in attitude in control and regulation began before Covid, and it won’t go away after it.
Regardless, the writing is on the wall. They intend to transfer a large portion of our flying to OAK. The only question is if the company continues to see enough value in having a small base out here. And neither you nor I know that. (Btw, I hope it stays and we can get back to normal again. Six months ago I was with you and thought they would never close this base. Now I am not so sure.)
Anyway, back to the topic at hand.

The UPS poster makes the most valid point. They do it without an Asia base. HKG could be closed in 3 months if need be. Look how much draft, housing pay, seed money, education money, return tickets, etc to keep it open. A couple deadhead tickets could be offset easily. OAK 76 and ANC 777 opened for a reason. The writing is on the wall. I find it interesting to see some of those screaming about how bad HKG was a year ago and now praying it doesn't close. They screamed and yelled themselves out of a great deal. They now realize the mistakes they made. I honestly feel bad for the group who didn't scream and yell and understood that most of the issues come with living in another country. Its goes with the territory when you bid and FDA. You cant have your cake and eat it to in all circumstances. I honestly hope things get better for the FDAs but we don't control government regulators and the knee jerk regulations and rules they make.

Please stop quoting him (NoWork) so the rest of us who have blocked him don’t have to see his crap.
It’s pretty clear that a HKG guy must have f-ed his wife while he was out on a trip he couldn’t pick up for anything more than straight pay. Hence his bitterness. That, or he really should see a professional about his unfounded animosity.

Well, to start:
FedEx has ~428 Aircraft in their main fleet
vs
UPS has ~277 Aircraft in their main fleet
FedEx IntraAsia Destinations:

(we don’t fly Cebu anymore and I don’t know about the NZ stuff, otherwise the map is correct)
