Default First United, now American

Just a heads up for frequent deadheaders. First United decided to end Global Services for corporate travelers, and now American Airlines has decided to stop offering frequent flier miles to most corporate fliers, unless you buy your ticket from American's website. Global Travel is still waiting for definitive word on how this will impact us. If it does, the change goes into effect 1 May 2024.

And just to preempt the inevitable angry responses...no, this has nothing to do with United or American pilots. And no, nobody thinks we shouldn't let them on our Jumpseats. This is simply a quality of life issue for FedEx pilots who deadhead on other airlines.

Slowly but surely and steadily, anything that we enjoy that is not written into our contract will be taken away from us. But hey, at least we have more wide-bodies on the ramp in NRT and KIX than UPS does!!

This has nothing to do with our contract. These decisions are being made by other companies and are directed at all their customers. Not just FedEx pilots.

This has everything to do with our contract and the fact that we are too meek to codify anything additional into it.

I don't think United is no longer giving miles, it was just their Global Services membership. And I doubt AA is denying miles to corporate travelers.

You think we should codify how other airlines run their frequent flier programs into our contract? Should we spend some of our negotiating capital to add language to our contract that says "Pilots should be able to book tickets on whatever airline has the best frequent flier mile program."? Believe it or not, getting frequent flier miles wasn't an option for years until airlines decided it was a good incentive to attract corporate fliers. And that really had nothing to do with Fedex or our contract. Like everything else, it was business. Just like the recent decisions by United and American to cut back on the benefits they offer to corporate fliers. Hopefully it will hurt their bottom line. Because if it doesn't, it's just going to get worse.

I specifically said United cut their Global Services membership. I also said Global Travel is currently waiting to hear how American's published changes (meaning they have already sent out emails and press releases saying they will end frequent flier miles to corporate travelers) will impact us. I'm not just making this stuff up.

Here's their press release
Earning on flights. AAdvantage Program

We can absolutely write a clause in that states that any tickets purchased for us must be eligible for unrestricted FF miles and status. I don’t think we would even be the first to do it. Atlas guys have similar language for their hotels, per their CBA, they get hotel points.

Great. Send that suggestion to the MEC.

Oh believe me, I have. Sitting in the trash can next to my suggestions that we fix scope while we can, don’t split retirement, etc.
