That's a not quite true. You can, in fact, leave as easily as the junior guy you're trying to convince to leave. You just don't want to because you'd have to give up your captain seat.

you’re assuming someone here 17 years is a captain. In a lot of situations a 17 year captain would be holding some terrible trips. It’s no surprise that people stay FOs forever because those are the only trips that won’t cause an early death
