Default Combined Commercial/CFI Course

I'm looking at doing my commercial and CFI this winter. While researching different flight schools nationwide, a program that's being offered at a handful of schools caught my attention; it was a combination commercial and CFI course. I was just wondering if anyone has done this. Who did you do the course through, what your impression of the course is, any tips before or after the course?

Thanks for your help.

Not sure of the specifics, but I'd highly suggest doing it like that. I did them separate and spent a lot more money doing it that way. All of the commercial stuff you'll see on the CFI ride. Getting it all done at one time is smart.

That's what I was thinking. From what I can tell, the student does the training from the right seat. The DPE/examiner sits in the left on both rides. The commercial checkride is a day or two before the CFI one. Seems like a good plan if it works.

Default How would you save money?

Could you elaborate what and how you're thinking you can save some money? I see two distinctive training that requires its own challenges and learning curve.

From what I gather, and for those that have completed this type of course please chime in, is that since the manuveurs for the commercial checkride and CFI checkride are practically identical, you are essentially taking just a CFI course. Once you are prepared enough to take your CFI checkride, you should also be prepared to take your commercial. Do the commerical a day or two before the CFI. So as long as you are proficient with your flying and your knowledge, you in theory will only have to pay for one course. Now, if your flying and knowledge skills are not up to par, then yes you will not save any money since you will be spending more time getting the rust broke loose.

Performing the required tasks (maneuvers) to PTS (ACS) Commercial standards is one thing, but adding the dimension of “teaching” the maneuvers and critique/evaluating of “student” performance takes it to a whole new level. It might be possible to achieve this concurrently, but in reality, this is ALOT to take on all at once.

We have taught maybe 6 of these in the last year: ME Commercial followed by SE Com then CFI/ME and CFI/SE and CFII all part 61 using our old Apache and a C172.
Get all the writtens complete: COM, FOI, FIA, IFI Use sheppardair.com to prepare.
Get the lesson plans from www.backseatpilot.com and build them up for the airplane(s) you plan to teach in. Practice teaching every lesson to anyone that will listen.
ASA oral test prep. New copy of AC61-65g.
