$105,000 is double what it should cost to go 0-CFI at a regular flight school.

Then don’t be a pilot. It’s a 6 figure job, it’s not supposed to be easy.

I would STRONGLY consider the military if I was you.

Meeting with an ROTC recruiter on Monday let’s see where that goes

Tells me all I need to know. Sponsor yourself, get a job, two even.
You do realize that it is nearly impossible to self fund unless you are already making well over $75k a year, right?

And I don't know too many college age kids who make that much money.

You obviously haven't checked prices these days. Yes ATP gouges people, there is no doubt about that. But they are also the only Part 61 that has financing options available to those who can't afford it. There are a lot of bad things about ATP but for some people it is their only option.

But yeah, military if he can sounds like the best choice.

I did it, so did many I know. Let’s step out of the gofundme generation and be problem solvers.

There you said it.
Can’t afford it.
Apparently he can afford a car loan.
Its crazy to go $105k in debt for a pipe dream.
Sell the car, get yourself a $1500 junker and start looking at jobs that pay more and take less time. No not drug dealing.
Friend of mine financed his flight training selling cellphones and plans.
See how long it takes to save $15k for your Private if you really dedicate yourself.
You won’t be able to make $1300 payments for the first 5-6 years.
Garanteed CFI is a pyramid scheme.
You need 2-3 full time students as a CFI.
So 10 CFI’s need 30 students that all have a guaranteed job as CFI.
They’ll need 300 students that all have a guarantee that will need 3000 students....
See where this goes? Technically you’ll have a job but no income.
No doubt they have clauses in their contract that they don’t have to hire you if you don’t meet certain standards.

I got carried away on my math,

10 need 30
30 need 90
90 need 270

You see where this goes?
If you plan your training the smart way it’s $60-$65k

ATP will finance the full $105,000 through Sallie Mae with an estimated monthly payment of $1300. Is this something that one could see to be manageable given the current market situation with a pilot career. My only other expenses are a $180 car note and $180 insurance payment. If I were to focus the beginning of my career into fully repaying the loan asap? I would get a 6month grace period after my 9 month training and a guaranteed flight instructor job at ATP and seems like (if there are no issues with my training/health) a guaranteed job at a regional once I reach my 1500 hours. ATP also supposedly offers a $11000 tuition reimbursement as well. Im 20 and get my AA in May as well and would like to start my training in May/June.
If you go this route, avoid then deferment at all costs. That is a payment deferment, not an interest deferment. Your $1300/month payment will be closer to $1800/month coming out of deferment after all the extra interest. At the very least pay all interest while your in deferment. I did the ATP thing...in 2004. It was about half the price back then, but of course i only made $18k my first year in the regionals. I didn’t get that loan paid off until i was three years at a legacy carrier and paid well over $100k for my $60k loan. $1300/month is a mortgage payment on a $300k house. Just think about that for a minute. The loan route is a big risk to take. Give it serious thought before putting yourself into six figure debt.
