Best advice I could give

Survival Kit contents check. In them you will find: one 45 caliber automatic, two boxes of ammunition, four days concentrated emergency rations, one drug issue containing antibiotics, morphine, vitamin pills, pep pills, sleeping pills, tranquilizer pills, one miniature combination Rooshan phrase book and Bible, one hundred dollars in rubles, one hundred dollars in gold, nine packs of chewing gum, one issue of prophylactics, three lipsticks, three pair of nylon stockings -- shoot, a fellah could have a pretty good weekend in Vegas with all that stuff....

Sad, but I fear many of the younger generation may not know what you're quoting from "Slim".

Headset, timer, flashlight, logbook, certs/medical, pencils/pens, mini-E6B, Charts...and I fit all that into a little tiny headset bag...not one of those ginormous bags that I see students carrying with half the stuff that I bring along.

Another sad indicator of the state of the industry is that most of the young sprouts likely don't realize that in the pre-Elizabeth Dole days, flight crews did NOT have to pass through the metal detector or be screened -and many of us carried our own 'anti-hijack'/security tools in the Jepp Kit.

My choice was a nice, compact Taurus semi-auto 9mm with a 15 shot clip. "Take me to Habana!" I DON'T think so! Not only did I not ever plan on meeting Fidel, I was prepared to help any hijacker to meet his Maker -AND it sure gave comfort on some of those 'iffy' layovers, like OAK & JFK.

Somehow, without DOT & TSA bungling,I think flying was a lot safer back then. . not to mention layovers.

You mean like back when Auburn Calloway was still in the cockpit?

classic film. the original line was, "shoot--a fella could have a pretty good weekend in DALLAS with all that stuff..."--then came November 22, 1963.

It was still illegal to carry a pistol back then. I would have like to see how you would have explained shooting a Cuban hijacker instead of complying with his request. I guess you missed the "common strategy" talk.
