Pretty interesting and valuable discussion about security, hope you don't mind a shift in direction...TravisUK's question brought back some memories.

I remember one Captain (long since retired) who carried a bottle of whiskey in his flight bag. I'm confident it was for layovers only (not inflight emergencies)! That was in the days when we walked around screeners.

At that time a lot of guys would have mentioned lighters and matches, also.

When I was a DC8 SO/FE we carried a mirror so that we could check the latches underneath the engine nacelles.

sounds like somebody just cleaned said flight bag

As for mine, 2 headsets, plotter, POH for whatever I'm flying, E6B (whiz wheel, no electronic one for me) Charts for my 'hood, approach plates for the same 'hood, foggles, three barf bags (one for my student, one for me, and second for the student that doesn't use the first one right), kneeboard, 39,010,171,081,808 pens and pencils (I always loose them in there to some black hole and never find them), flashlight, and my grandpa's money clip (sentimental)

Ditto on the NASA form. I also carry 4 to 5 health food bars, a stack of PostIt notes, a clipboard, Tabasco sauce, and condoms.

Default Is Affirmative Action to blame?

As per Captain Drew's earlier post on page 3, I certainly hope this idiot's being black won't throw caution into the wind for other folks wanting to join the company's ranks in the future. It seems there were several times quality control COULD have stopped the process along the way, but did not. Specifically in the HR departments of the various companies. It's easy to blame affirmative action or EO when someone is "behind the power curve", but really it is an easy excuse to use for substandard performance if the person is not white. Substandard performance is equal along all races, but this is an easy label if they are other than white. This guy is an isolated incident and a disgrace in every community he is/was involved with. Don't assume for even a second that any minorities you meet in the future are there due to affirmative action. I have witnessed people working so hard to get past that. Skills and qual's should suffice.

As for my flight bag, extra ear plugs, skull cap, flash light, a few piddle packs and barf bags, extra flight gloves and alcohol swabs, and finally, candy.

None of you take a knife? I realize the airline crowd can't, but for you CFIs out there, I'm surprised no one listed that. I keep one in case I go down and have to hike back/camp. Unlikely, but since the camp knife doesn't take up much room, I just throw it in.
