Thats funny...most of the pilots at my airline I talk to who went to Riddle either regret it or say it was great when they were there back in the '80s but that they wouldn't go there today. I think the thing people regret the most about is the student loan payment. Real tough to eek by when half your first year paycheck is gone right away to pay for the education that got you your $20,000/yr job. Take out taxes and benefit payments and you're looking at a couple hundred dollars left over each month to eat, work and play. I don't know about you, but tough for me to feel like an adult with a respectable job when I have to crash on someone's couch. You know what I did with my $800/mo that is NOT going to student loans? I bought a house.

You're comparing apples to bowling balls here. Besides that fact that the name "Stanford" embossed on your diploma means a hell of a lot to a hell of a lot more people than a Riddle degree and that a degree from a respected 4 year institution is required for most masters programs in her field, she didn't go to Stanford to just check a box. In the aviation world, thats all a 4 year degree is really for...checking the box. You don't need it to fly airplanes. Does it make you a better, more well rounded individual? Absolutely. But does a truck driver need a minor in philosophy to be a safe truck driver? Probably not. I'll say it again: you will have the SAME certificates as anyone else when you leave Riddle (or any other over priced school) just you will be feeling the pain (meaning money) of getting those certificates more acutely and for far longer than someone who went the cheap route. If you're hell bent on Riddle, try and major in something BESIDES Aviation Science or whatever BS it is. At least with a management degree you have SOME hope of recouping your school expense.

Looking into ERAU's extended campus. You get the same degree for 1/3rd of the cost. I got my B.S. (Professional Aeronautics) through Orlando's extended campus and am currently 1/2 way done with my M.S. (Aeronautical Science) through distance learning. My degree has "Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Daytona Beach" on it.

Got a question. I just looked at Riddle's online B.S. Aeronautics yesterday. I have not called yet, but can you tell me what they charged you per credit hour? I just want to know if I'm getting the straight story from them? Also, I have an Associates in Aviation. Did you have a prior degree going in? If so, did they give any credit?

I would have to agree. I finished in Fall of '87. At the time, Riddle cost me on average about $1850-2350 per semester. That's less than 25K boyz for a B.S in Aeronautical Studies w/AOC in Air Transportation Management!!!

Btw, I got my A.S. degree as well.

I started my flight training in Orlando and was enrolled at ERAU's Orlando campus both at the same time. I didn't have a degree or a job, I went to a flight school and ERAU straight out of high school in 1997. For undergrad, I remember paying $400 a class, which comes to about $133/credit. For grad school, I'm now paying $1100 a class, which comes to about $366/credit.

Current Extended campus rates are listed as $207- $253 for undergrad, which even at the high range is $759 per class. Compare that to $ 1060 per credit hour for $3180 per class for graduate or undergraduate at Daytona! As I said before, you end up getting the same degree, the only difference is that you are not at the main campus.

With your A.A. degree you'll get credit towards the B.S. degree. They should give you 60 credits depending on the course work that you took.

IF you didn't have your A.A. but had 1000 hours of PIC time or 500 hours as a CFI (like I did), ERAU gives you 36 credits of aviation experience towards your 120 credit B.S. Professional Aeronautics degree. If you do not have these hours, you can start the B.S. program with a memorandum of understanding that you won't get your degree unless you have these hours or unless you pay for 36 credits of course work/class.

If I do the math right, my entire B.S. degree through ERAU costed me less than $12,000 + books. ($133/credit x 90). That is what you'll pay for 9 credits/3 courses today at the Daytona campus.
