Default Another CFI reinstatement

Heard a rumor that if one's CFI expired long enough ago, only the FSDO can assign the DPE for the checkride. At least that is what the OAK FSDO believes. I can find nothing written in this regard - other than for initial CFI applicants. Anybody know how the local feds are coming to this conclusion? What's to stop me from just finding some DPE out of the blue and arranging the ride myself? Note: I don't know if the FSDO's opinion applies to all CFI rececks or only to those applicants whos' certificate has benn expired for a certain number of years. Mine has been expired since 1990.

I've never heard that but haven't checked into it for a while. Worst case, take the ride in another FSDO's jurisdiction.

I don't know why the number of years would have anything to do with it. I got reinstated with a DE, but that was like 30 years ago. Anyhow, it's my understanding that DE's can do this. I'd contact a DE in your area and ask them. Get it done and then don't ask any questions.....

The problem is you just don't know where it comes from. Did the DE tell you this or did you make the mistake of asking the FSDO first? I've never heard of it, although I admit I'm not always privy to these things. I'd contact (directly) an examiner in another jurisdiction and see what is said. If he / she's never heard of the policy then there's your answer - and a pretty good place to go for your reinstatement.

If true, bizarre - control freaks with too much time on their hands.

One possibility is that DEs are designated with specific authority. IOW, DEs that do CFI rides have been authorized by the FSDO to do CFI rides. I can imagine a situation where, in order to give the FSDO control over CFI rides, they simply don't authorize any DEs to do them, or only authorize DEs to do certain types of rides.

A ride with a fed is free.

The double II ride is not hard and the CFI in general is not something that most of us in the aviation community would want you to find the easy way out on. Just sign up for a free ride, teach them what pendulous vanes do and renew your ticket.

I've spoken with 4 different examiners and none of them mentioned the FSDO thing. But I talked briefly to a local flight school owner/CFI who told me he was helping a former CFI re institute her (expired CFI) certificate, and just happened to - during an unrelated conversation with the FSDO - mention this to the federale. He (the school owner) said the guy he talked to was insistant that, just like an initial CFI applicant, a re institute candidate must submit his or her name to the FSDO and wait for them to select a DPE. The ride doesn't have to be with a fed, just someone approved by the local office.

Well, you might just get it done with your choice of examiner. The worst thing that would happen is that your paperwork might be held up awhile before being sent east, but I doubt it. The examiner might be scolded, but I really don't know on what basis. I've never heard of this anywhere, nor do I see any point to the "policy". They may want to have some input in scheduling so that they can have somebody observe, but that's a pretty ham-handed way to set it up. Make sure you do the ride in a two-seater to keep from having to fly with a "guest". Otherwise, just go to another region as suggested.

I just had a Federale ride my jumpseat last week, and of course asked him about the policy. I'm paraphrasing, but he said if I just go find an examiner to take the ride, the paperwork doesn't even get to the fsdo's desk because it's all done by computer and goes straight to Oaky city. No worries.

I had a Fed AND a DE tell me I had to do the Oral exam and everything all over again. This after My CFI had been expired since '01 (reinstated Nov '08) Thru talking with a co-worker he hooked me up with a DE in Tulsa who just "brought me up to speed" with all of the changes in the rules since my CFI had expired in '01. 1.5 hours of refresher stuff with the DE and .5 in the pattern and it was complete. Never trust what 1 Fed has to say. My .02
