I am a bit of a cheap skate and I still think ANR is worth it. You should let ANR if you fly pistons. Sets with decent ANR start at about $250. You need to preserve your hearing for one thing, and the extra quiet is nice over long hours. Piston pilots should all have ANR in my opinion, it's just not that much extra cash. ANR is a proven, effective, mature technology for headsets. Only beginners should attempt to do without it, mostly because they are not sure if they are going to stick with flying. After deciding to go for an IR I would vote to buy a set with ANR.

Clarity aloft is non ANR, but has equal or better noise reduction. I have flown bonanzas barons king airs jets, skyhawks all with the CA headset. Around half of what I fly has no interior. The flights are very loud. I wouldn't be doing my duty as a fellow pilot if I didn't suggest the Clarity aloft. At least look into it.

I know they work well in general, but I would day for some purposes a set of clamps is best. Namely, any type of flying where you might disturb the wires with frequent head turning or shuffling things around in the cockpit. Tail gunners definitely need clamps . If you can sit still then an earplug-type set like C/A would probably be fine and might even be better. It is a fact that earplug-type passive noise reduction is equal or better than active clamp-style noise reduction. But they are close.

The only thing I dislike about the CA is if I need to go to the back of the airplane. It takes probably 20-30 seconds to get the set on VS 5 seconds with a clamp style. BUT, in the long run, this isn't a big deal. And I understand why you would think that moving around would cause problems, but during flights, I am moving around looking for issues all around the flight deck, writing in a quality assurance book, and flying. I don't run into any problems at all. Any potential movement issues are solved by the rubber band that goes behind your head (completely adjustable). Many people would not be caught dead with this type of headset, but knowing that I am enjoying a better audio quality, and a MUCH MUCH more comfortable flight experience makes up for it.

Glad you can hear so good- I wouldn't want to run into one of you guys on the east side on account of cheap headsets! Now that I think of it I am sure you know me by voice, so drop me a line when you get to 35.

Ha, now I am intrigued! You work ATC or something? Shoot I'll have to work hard to get to 35 posts. Been on here for a long time and you can see I lay pretty low.

Not ATC but it's a small world in Wichita. I know a bunch of the ATC people and they ride in my little airplane too. Enough for now- I'll talk to 'ya in a bit.

I'm not talking about my 7 airline type ratings. I'm talking piston aircraft too. Yes, I still fly them. I still don't need ANR.
