Very good advice, and one I will heed. Possibly why the branches of the Military are such big sticklers for no cameras in the cockpit. Some branches more than others, but nonetheless, very good point.

No reason not to use tech once you get your certs, but at least be ready to do it the old fashioned way on the checkrides.

My flight school more or less dissuaded us from using iPads a lot, but that didn't mean the instructors really cared about it. Still get good doing calculations the old way, though, as the common advice goes. A classmate of mine had to redo all his numbers on a check ride with the E6B (I don't remember if it was for instrument or commercial).

But just last week I observed an instrument check ride where the examiner was using his iPad (and iPhone) with Foreflight. He kept passing it back to show me the geo-referenced plates overlaid on the sectional. The student had one too, but with Garmin's app. Its definitely nice to have and I want to purchase a mini as well.

Foreflight on the iPad mini...I cannot recommend it enough.

I use the product in the link below to hold the mini. I have not found a good place (for me in small general aviation aircraft) to mount it via a suction cup.

I have the 3G version so I don't need an external gps if I'm flying below 5k. I have a 'Dual' gps if I fly higher and/or want to save the iPad's battery.

The guys at my company that bring their own tech usually have full size iPads (some have minis) with the external GPS receiver. We have a little more room on the flight deck than some though (747). We get a subscription to Jepp FDPro through the company. A nice ANR headset is a great investment too. I use the Bose QC15 with UFlyMike adapter for about $525 together which is pretty popular.
