Default New Gear for New Pilots

Hello all,

I apologize if this is a duplicate thread, but I have a few questions regarding what is considered as necessary/good gear to have for a student going through a 141 school for all my Fixed Wing Certs.

I have an iPad Mini. What are the best apps and addons (cases, holders inside the airplane, etc.) for the device?

Bluetooth GPS "Puck" (non-ADS-B) - Is this a considered a requirement now? Which one is a good one to have? Any good or bad experiences with them?

Video Cameras? Strictly for "studying" purposes only... Are they welcomed? should I invest in one? if so, which one?

Feel free to add anything I am missing, thank you for your help!

Very Respectfully,

MedHawk

Honestly those items you mentioned sound all like gee wiz type of things. You don't need any of that to successfully complete training. You'll find a lot of those things turn out to be a hindrance than anything else.

What, if anything, would you deem necessary for the training?

The Ipad Mini fits fine on top of one of those zero g knee boards that you can get around Ft. Rucker, so assuming you've got one already you're good there. If you've got the cellular version Ipad the internal GPS has proven good enough. I also have a Garmin GLO, but honestly I don't use it much because it's just another thing to slide around the airplane. As for apps, I'm a big fan of Foreflight Pro. Having georeferenced taxi diagrams and approach plates is a big help on cross countries into unfamiliar fields. Obviously "aviate, navigate, communicate," etc, but if the tools are out there to supplement what's in the airplane, why not use them?

Thats how I feel about it. I already have the iPad so why not let it help me while I am flying. Im just wondering what pilots use to supplement the normal aviating practices. I have heard of foreflight and will most likely go with that, I have heard many a good thing about that app. Thanks for the imput!

It just all sounds like things to give someone the reason to fly headsdown and also show their friends videos of steep turns and stalls.

There was a high level of sarcasm in my reply, it was a round-about way to agree with you. In my experiences, what you said previously is 100% true. I am merely trying to get a glimpse at what other people use to help them get though each flight (camera notwithstanding, maybe for just one or two xcountry videos. I would not want anyone to see my face while I am sweating through the maneuvers you listed). Already having an iPad Mini, I am curious to see whats out there. That is all, Thank you for you help, and contribution.

There is no reason in this day an age to ever use the Whiz Wheel....especially if you are trying to break it out and figure out things while flying....use your IPAD or simular GPS type device and back it up with some paper charts in your nav bag.
I think the camera thing is not a good idea, you might say it's just for training...but it could easily lead to "watch this" type of behavior....I'm not a saying you would....but I probably would!!! So that's why I don't take one!
