Later on in your career when you upgrade to instructor you can take another equivalency test to have CFII added to your ticket. There is not a military equivalency test for the ATP, we have to take the written and practical just like everyone else, but your total time is reduced for the minimums to take the ATP checkride.
Oh ok. Thanks a lot for the info. I'm really stepping ahead of myself, but I was curious; I started looking at willflyforfood and their pilot interviews. Seems really intense. (Major airline)

Many good options mentioned here, but here is one more. Find a four year school close to a KC135 reserve unit (McDill and Tampa to start) and try to get on as a boom operator. Wear a flight suite, get paid to go to college, start on your rating on the side. Your last year before you graduate, start applying to ANG or Reserve units for a pilot slot. Avoid active duty if you can. Too much drama and lots of drone flying. Back up plan is to go the civilian route but continue to reapply to ANG or reserve units. You have until your 30.
Good luck.

Would this be for the Air Force? And what can I do to get on as a boom operator? Previous experience needed?

Alas, someone who is looking at it from a pragmatic point of view and not from some misguided "passion". My advice: avoid purdon't or any other aviation college. Get a standard four year degree, then go to All ATP. This is, of course, if the military doesn't pan out.

Haha, and thanks for the advice. Do you really learn how to fly planes in 180 days and get all your ratings? It just seems like it would be a rushed job.

Generally speaking, the ATP folks that I fly with are the best sticks out there(don't tell that to the purdubies though)

Boom operators on the KC 135 are USAF active or reserve, not sure there are any Air National Guard units out there. No experience required. Each unit has a recruiting web site, office and contact information listed on line. Remember you can have different options available as you move forward…4 year degree, working towards a private and other ratings, trying to get on with a unit, etc.

Google a KC135 or any other unit (C130, C17, F16) in your home town or within a few hours. Go talk with a recruiter..ask questions about being a pilot or joining the unit as enlisted. Boom operator, Flight engineer..load master, crew chief all depends on the units needs. You can always say "no" at any time and most people fail to even walk in the door to talk with a unit to get smart on their options.

Default Boomer article!

many ways to get there…but this is pretty cool way of doing it…esp., if you ANG or reserve, going to college close to where you drill and knocking out some type rating too.
