Any answers to this would be appreciated.

I have a Commercial MEL and passed the ATP "written" a couple of months ago. My understanding has been that I can take the multi ATP ride any time within two years of the written exam date without worrying about the CTP requirements.

Now I'm being told by multiple sources that after 1 Aug, the CTP does kick in and must be completed before I can take the ATP ride.

That is completely inconsistent with what I've seen in the FAR's. One "expert" from a well know aviation organization even suggeted that after 1 Aug, a multiengine "written exam" is also required?

Even my local FSDO wasn't sure if you can believe that!

A local DPE at my airport was saying the same thing even the regulations say otherwise. Lots of confusion around.

But why wait, I passed test about 3 wks ago and was going to go slow about it.

Friends talked me into staying on it. Plan to have done in July.

I am unable to take pay cut now to fly but still would like an ATP at a non draconian cost. So getting the test done by 7/31/14 is the answer.

Your understanding is correct. The CTP will be a prerequisite for the written exam after July 31st.

Thanks, that's spelled out in the FAR.

However, the question is whether the CTP will be a prerequisite for the check ride after 31 July, assuming the written was passed prior to that date. The regs seem to say no, but interpretations from people who claim to know differ.

As a corollary question, what if one has a single engine ATP prior to 31 July and wants to upgrade a Comm Multi to ATP after 31 July? CTP required given the fact that the written was already passed?

It's amazing to me that with only 2 months to go, that there's so much confusion, even among FAA people!

Because I don't yet have 50 hours of multi and may not amass it before 1 August.

See 61.165(f). It talks about adding a ME rating to a SE ATP. It does look like there will be a separate ATP ME written. And in order to take that written you'll have to meet 61.35.

The CTP is the prerequisite for the written exam alone. If you have the written exam completed before August 1st, 2014, then you are grandfathered into the older version of the ATP check ride if you complete it within 24 months of the date of your written exam. The new regulations are solely for the purpose of having adequate "training" before being eligible to take the written exam. Since you already have that done, keep building your hours and take the practical whenever you can, as long as it is within 24 months of the written exam. If you fail to have an ATP before the written exam results expire, you will then have to go through the new CTP in order to retake the written test.

This is the explanation that has been explained to me by several FAA people, 2 pilots in major airline training departments, 2 DPE's, and also talking with about 25 fellow CFIs.

In looking at the current FAA FAR site, I now see that. I'd been looking at an older FAA site that is obviously outdated.
