My understanding is that they are still planning on adding planes and pilots. Couple of reasons...1, they believe the economy will turn around sooner rather than later and they want to be positioned with capacity to take advantage of that when it does happen. 2, apparently many many japanese pilots at mainline ana are retiring in the next few years and they simply dont have enough to backfill them so they are hiring the expats to the 767 operations.
good luck...

As bad as the length of the training is, it actually works in your favor when things go bad. I think they believe that the downturn will be relatively short lived and it is cheaper to keep you on than to have to retrain you. During the SARS outbreak no one was furloughed but they were asked to work part time until things turned around. 15 on 15 off with 70% pay. I would think we would see that before we would see a furlough here.
In addition to the 787, they short runway in NRT is being lengthened and a 4th runway is being built in Haneda. Capacity is expect to increase significantly with those two projects are completed and AJX is expected to benefit from that growth. But don't forget you are temporary help and we will all be shown the door before they ever even think about letting a Japanese pilot go. But I don't see that happening for now.

Asia,
good point about the 787 issues....I had forgotten about that. It was cool to see the "787 #1 sim" at the training center. Wish they had let us inside it, but I guess that just wasnt gonna happen! I have to say though, I was impressed with the 767 sim...it was immaculate! Cleanest sim I have ever been in

Captain T - you can get answers from Alan at Crew but don't expect to hear back from ANA any time soon. I'm still waiting after almost 2 months to get an interview slot. Do expect crew to thoroughly grill you on why you want to make (to them) a lateral move from UAL to ANA. I was quizzed on that a lot and I hope that I made my points clear to him. These agencies I believe screen candidates (I may be wrong) and they won't put forward someone who will not commit to the full 5 years.
Let us know what your hear back, and if you get an interview as captain before I do the it just must be me!

Mike,
I would agree that they screen applicants. I was asked about how my family would handle me being gone and if i could handle the training etc. I know that you are a capt now, but have you though about going in as an FO? Might get a slot sooner?
Good luck

I would do it in a minute if I absolutely had to have a job, which, in this day and age, could be tomorrow if the disfunctional airline known as US Airways craters for good. As it stands right now I could not pass the wife test to take a paycut for this opportunity. I also have an interview coming up at Korean and some other options down the road. This appears to be a great opportunity, I have the time to wait it out right now, and I will be patient with the process. I actually am glad to see that F/Os are getting the chance to upgrade, it makes for a much better work environment. So we will see how this all plays out.
