Just curious - I am leaving the navy soon and have been looking at a major cargo company and NJ very hard. What is making you leave the cargo business for NJ??

The only and I really do mean only downside I see with NJ is that the work less and get paid more program doesn't seem to work like it would with a major. And I say this soley based on what I see from the reservists I see in my squadron at major freight companies that are sked for 7 day trips and drop mil leave or move vacation days and get paid for the whole month and never worked a day?? That is the program I am looking for! It just seems that the contract the unions have at the majors allow for more flexibility with your sked.
Don't get me wrong if I was an owner of a company like NJ I would want my pilots to work for there pay. It would just be nice to be a 15+ captain and be able to throttle back your sked and still make the $$, and I only see that with the majors (UPS/FED EX). Isn't true that no matter how senior you are at NJ you will still work the 7/7 , 15 or 18 day sked. If I'm wrong about that let me know.

Yes Refund, those are the options at NJ, 7/7, 15 and 18. This is the only area where the majors/box-haulers blow NJ out of the water, the schedulling. With the 121 carriers, once you build up your seniority, you can almost make your own schedule. At NetJets, it will be 7/7, 15, 18 for the rest of your flying days. But you'll be able to live wherever you want, move as much as you like, and never have to worry about commuting. Pick your poison.......decisions, decisions

Picking your poison is absolutely the right - this has been a tougher decision than I thought it ever would

I fly for a large part 91 department and I have to admit that the health benefits and retirement at NetJets are extremely attractive.

The schedule, unfortunately, is significantly worse than I currently enjoy. Nonetheless I may apply at some point in the future. Timing just isn't right today.

Hopefully a rising tide lifts all boats and our benefits will improve to more closely match those at NetJets.

I know guys at UPS and I can assure you while some enjoy a decent schedule, many senior guys are working like dogs and it hurts. Once you get senior enough, you start looking at upgrading and then start the whole process over again. I know about 40 pilots at UPS plus some folks in very senior positions, and had a pretty good shot at them. Great company, great money...the schedule SUCKS and it was something I could not justify.

I am now going to be with my top choice...and could not be happier...I hope!

I can see some of what you are saying - if your a senior enough FO or Capt then you pick your sked and work what you want. If you are junior FO or Capt or just upgraded then your picking up the not so great trips - but I disagree the skeds SUCKS. It's your choice to upgrade or not but your sked will only get better with time where your sked at NJ will always stay the same right??

Yes, your schedule will remain "the same" (7/7, 15, or 18 whichever you bid for) but your vacation slots increase with longevity. Captains on the 7/7 schedule with 10 or more years on property get FOUR 21-day vacation slots per year and can take up to 7 paid "personal days" per year.

FWIW

Each place has its pros and cons. The cargo flying will age you. I've seen it with guys in my squadron. I've thought about going to FedEx and UPS, but my QOL at NJ is great. Especially, after our last TA passed. I'm on the busiest fleet, and I don't feel I work that hard at all.
