CAPA - Spirit and Frontier add new ULCC competition in Atlanta, will Delta or Southwest feel the most heat?
Crazy thought: Instead of beating one another about the head and neck, what if Frontier and Spirit cooperated to compete against WN and Big 3. Since the Legacies won’t allow us to re-book stranded pax on their flights etc, what if Spirit did, and vice-versa? Not suggesting a merger or anything, just some synergies that would be mutually beneficial to both of us. It seems foolish to compete head to head with our ‘sister-esque’ airline when we’ve been told ad-nauseam that together we only make up 1/10th of the untapped ULCC potential in America. You know as compared to Europe? Just a thought – feel free to set me strait. NK guys please chime in too.

If you have some proof, I would be excited to read it.

I don't have copies of the policy, but United will not allow rebooking on Frontier and vice versa. It's not a F9 policy.

I almost got bumped off a commute when 100 F9 folks got rebooked on to Southwest OKC-DEN. So it happens. Last flight of the night, it showed mostly empty when I booked it. Got to the gate and it was madness.
And yes, their bags flew for free.

Did this happen recently? Perhaps it's just United and my brain extrapolated the rest. I'll try to find out.

This is totally incorrect. The airlines do not restrict anyone from rebooking. It's a common courtesy. The rates are established for rebookings between carriers and are not very cheap. Low cost airlines choose not to participate because the rebooking rate is often well above what they charged for the ticket. Even given that I once carried 22 Spirit passengers who had been stranded for a day. Spirit brought a check to pay for their tickets since they are not even set up in the standard interline payment system.
I searched the internet and can't figure it out. United's website says this:
Using another airline. When United has delayed or canceled a flight due to reasons such as certain mechanical problems, and you are going to be delayed more than two hours, we will try to book you on another airline with which we have an agreement for rebooking.
This is found here: Flight Delays & Cancellations And then click the "Getting Rebooked" bullet point to expand it.
Our leadership told us in recurrent ground school that once we changed to a ULCC, United cancelled their agreement with us and will no longer accommodate our passengers for rebooking.Could it be that rebooking is always an option at the 'right price', but these agreements set up more favorable rebooking rates?

I'm sure it depends on the cost each airline pays to rebook on another airline. frontier probably doesn't want to pay a lot more money to United then what they took in from passengers. Say a F9 passenger bought a ticket for $60 but United charges $100. F9 would not only lose the $60 but have to pay an additional $40 to get the passenger on United.
