Reserve line start out all long call, except, the company can convert two groups of reserve days to short call per month. So they tend to build two blocks of six days and convert those.

Learn how to bid. There are ways to avoid six days on call, which are almost guaranteed to be converted to short call. ‘Max days on in a row: 5’, etc.

Reserve rules are changing in the new contract. In the current contract, we do have airport reserve, but it doesn’t get used.

Would it be fairly easy for a DEC to drop some reserve days sometimes in ORD or EWR? Or does the grid always remain red?

You can't trade reserve days with the company, but you can offer them for trade. So you'd need to find a pilot with a group of days off who's happy to sit reserve for you. Pilots usually pay $200-500 to have someone pick up their trips, I've seen $1000 and $1500 paid to get out of undesirable trips.

You'll probably pay $3000 to get out of reserve.

With the current premium pay, it makes no sense for anyone to pick up your reserve days when there's ample open time trips that'll pay $8000+.

Ok so from what I understand, they can convert two groups of days to short call. If you have...plenty of options to get to work then I could probably do long call from home. But I am suspecting I'd probably be used every single day on reserve as a DEC am I right? I have a CJO, I'm just trying to decide if this is worth it or not. I'm currently on the corporate side, previous 121, and I seriously am not sure if I'm a "corporate" type.. LOL... so I'm just looking at options to for TPIC and possibly some bonus $$.

That’s with the current contract, and we should be able to review the new contract for feedback within the next few weeks. Reserve rules are where some of the biggest changes are coming. How much you get used will depend on your base. As a CA, I flew less than 30 hours/mo on reserve in November and December. At a different base, that may not be the case.
