Iv had this happen o my students too, apparently cherokee isnt good enough even though "cherokee" encompasses all very very similar aircraft in terms of speed. They need to hear PA28 or whatever.

waiting to take off at pdk airport in Atlanta
ATC Arrow xxxxx hold short 34 monitor tower
Arrow ok cleared for take off
ATC negative hold short monitor tower
Arrow over to tower cleared to for take off
ATC negative this is ground control I cannot issue that clearance
Arrow Ok over to tower
(at this time we got clearance to monitor as well) The arrow starts rolling onto the runway as I hit the switch
tower arrow xxxxx where are you going
arrow the last guys cleared us to take off
tower negative STOP exit the runway at the next intersection advise when you can copy a phone number
