Default Stupid Question

So every time i drive by the Kalamazoo airport my cop, or radar detector gets a "LASER" alert... The road runs parrarell to the main runway 17-35 which has an ILS.. only thing i can think of making it go off. Any other ideas?

ILS freqs are 100-300 MHz. Radar freqs are in the tens of gigaherz, so it's probably not the ILS triggering your detector. It's possible that the energy output from the ILS is powerful enough to trip the detector by energizing internal circuits, as opposed to the antenna (which is tuned in the gigaherz range).

The airport radar might do it too, that would be closer to the right freq.

It was pretty funny the first time it happened i just bolted down a side street, then the next time i realized it was something at the airport triggering this to happen.. Oh well.

Its the airport radar. Take a look at it next time if you can, your detector will go off every time it spins around toward you.

Air surveillance radar would be my guess too. Sometimes you can even hear the sweep when listening to FM.

Unfortunately this was a laser detector - has nothing to do with radar. Some type of light beam is setting the thing off - proximity to an airport may be coincidental. It might actually be a laser. Might the fuzz have set up a camera type (automated) speed trap there?

Good point.. about right at the point i get this "laser alert" is at the approach end of runway 5 which has a PAPI, maybe this could be it?

It is the airport radar causing it... I did some research a while back because it was doing it to me as well. It has something to do with it being high powered and messing with the radar/laser/lidar detector. Doppler radars will do it too within about 1/2 mile or less depending on radar detector sensitivity and line of sight. Yes, even though it is radar causing it, the laser warning goes off.

Mine has gone off several times while driving on I-285 right by the ATL airport (the stretch of road that goes UNDER runway 10-28. It's bizarre.

Edit: And my laser one goes off, not radar.
