Default Retirement Cities - Any Suggestions?

My husband is threatening to retire soon and made me look into different cities or towns where we can make our final home. So, I am looking at San Antonio, Phoenix, Kansas City, Boise, Las Vegas (?), Omaha and Tupelo.

I'd appreciate comments from people who live there as to housing, taxes, weather, etc. I hate to leave Seattle, but I can't very well divorce the poor man after 20+ years, can I?

What do you all think about Memphis? Key West? San Francisco? Tucson?

Boise has access to all of the great outdoors of Idaho, but also has reasonable nightlife, culture, and progressive thinking (for ID). Plenty of relocated californians.

PHX is great if you like to shop, golf, or ride ATV's.

LAS is what it is...if you love that kind of action, there's no better place. Otherwise it's pretty much like PHX.

SAT has a nice riverwalk and downtown nightlife.

SFO has them all beat hands down...if you can afford to live there.

We could better help you if you give us your top five priorities i.e. cost of living, type of weather, local entertainment desired, etc.

If San Antonio is on your list then you should also look at Austin and Fort Worth (not Dallas). I have lived in all those places and my order would be Austin, Fort Worth then San Antonio.

I spent a fair amount of time in Omaha. I will never go back. Bitter cold, windy and not much to do.

Have you looked into Colorado Springs or a town near Denver (Littleton, Parker, etc)?

Out of the four you ask about I would pick Tucson.

Wow, she is all over the map on her retirement choices. I dont really see any pattern there when she added Key West, Tupelo, Omaha, and Memphis? Those four cities certainly would NOT be on my list. I agree with his statement about Austin, that city is amazing, great climate, and has everything. However, the as mentioned above, some suburbs of Denver are also a great choice. Look into Louisville and Longmont as well. I would not choose anywhere in California unless you only want to be retired for about 2 years then go back to work.

Somewhere in New Mexico? I have thought about it. They got skiing, hunting, lots of artsy fartsy things (if you like that sort of thing). But not many people in the state a big plus for me.

Vagabond,

I suspect you will both be happiest right where you are. Any city improves greatly when one retires and becomes free to take advantage of all there is to do there, especially a place like Seattle.

Personally, I would pick somewhere on the outer banks, NC or Wilmington, NC. Great beaches, plenty to do and not touristy like places in Florida, etc...

How about any place that doesn't penalize you for working hard and making responsible decisions your whole life? Like you, Vagabond, I live in the PNW and can think of a mess of other places that fall into that category. You just have to ignore others telling you that certain parts of the country are bassackwards and dry as toast. If Tupelo is on your list then I'm preaching to the choir. I know you're ahead of the game.

Last time I was there an American pensionado told me that the gov't there did not tax pensions. Great weather, easy access back to the US, pretty good infrastructure--health, transportation, etc. Well educated populace for the most part. Crime in SJ not much different than in any other big city.

Lots of Americans retiring there.

It has been 10 or 12 years so I may have dated info.
