Do You Support Pay Banding?
#1
For decades pilots were paid using a formula based on aircraft weight under the assumption that doing so maximized potential pilot income as planes got heavier and heavier since pay would necessarily go up as weight went up. During the recent decades of bankruptcies management forced pay banding on pilot groups as a concessionary agreement, but now over time many have come to expect pay banding as normal and would prefer to "spread the wealth".
So what are the advantages to pay banding? Does it increase our career earnings expectations? Is it easier to negotiate pay raises? What? Aside from being more "fair" for the junior folks what is the attraction?

Where's the incentive to move up? For arguments sake lets say Delta did that. If I can be a senior captain on a Mad Dog writing my own schedule for the same amount of money as I would make as a junior reserve captain on a 777, why would I ever want to move up?

Hmmm, flying back side of the clock is a young man's game, maybe there's something to that! How about one rate and fly what your seniority can hold.

This should be an interesting thread, as I'm trying to follow the Banding stuff with UAL/CAL. I really don't have a solid argument for one or the other, but I'd choose whichever lead to an industry leading contract with good QOL.

Each has its advantages and disadvantages, however, I believe it is better to chase QOL than worry about pay. I support a pay structure like UPS has, I think it is excellent in the long run and leads to a more fulfilling career.

European airlines structure their pay this way. It allows the international routes to be done by the young guys and the short domestic turns that have guys home every night or every other night while flying a 73N to be done by the senior guys.

Saves the company training costs, and increases a GEEZER'S Life after retirement. lol
What are the ramifications of this type of system? I am trying to see the negative effects.

Trying to get a pilot group that is currently structured with top pay on the biggest aircraft to convert to said system. They won't give up their pay to bring the bottom NB guys up and have everyone get paid the same based on longevity. Can't say that I blame them, but if you go to a system like that, someone at the top has to give something up (or not get as big of raise as others).
