Tool of the day

So I like looking outside, and I will leave my hand on the flap lever so I can extend/retract without having to go look for the handle. I think (hope?) most of the people I fly with get the point when I brief "if you fly, you fly. if I REALLY want something different, I will say something". If you fly with "hand-hover-as-a-hint" make them do something that requires them to move the hand. Also, definitely, hover back when they fly. Can still remember the guy getting really annoyed with me keeping my hand on the gear handle the whole 30 mile final, but it was worth it.

I accidentally bugged a speed below a min speed the other day and the captain very calmly said after going slightly below "hey man how about some more flaps?" "DOH! Yes please" he replied with "almost had that perfect flight I was rootin for ya!" Great guy and handled my mess up the right way IMO.

On the flip side of the coin, I was conducting line training with a new F/O. He gripped the Gear Lever before V1, to which I commanded, “Remove your hand from the G/L”. We discussed the matter once in cruise with the SOPs in hand. Once back at base, in briefing room, I had individual explained the importance of following SOPs, CRM and perils of uncommanded actions undertaken and or performed by the PM.

.....and this right here is why those who came up through the CFI route make better Captains then those who didn't. A CFI would know the implications of a Captain hovering their hands over the control surfaces to a newish FO that is flying.

Exactly. Someone gets it. It takes half a second to move hands to the controls from a comfortable resting position. Let the pf fly the plane.

This reminds me of the CA that would say “not yet...now” when I called “10,000” a second early.
I still feel joy from my passive aggressive elongated “teeeeen thhhhhoooooousaaaaand” for the rest of the trip. He literally sat there shaking his head in agony.
SWA hired him.
