Why don’t you ask? You like the “hint and hope” philosophy?

Our SOP is to call approaching FAF. That’s a good jogger to finish the configuration process.

Totally agree. Far less distracting to sit silently until just before drastic measures must be taken than to have a guy’s hand someplace in the cockpit out of my line of sight.

Have had that a few times here as well.

Also when the hand comes out, I purposefully (but safely) delay even further. I accidentally bugged a speed below a min speed the other day and the captain very calmly said after going slightly below "hey man how about some more flaps?" "DOH! Yes please" he replied with "almost had that perfect flight I was rootin for ya!" Great guy and handled my mess up the right way IMO.

So I like looking outside, and I will leave my hand on the flap lever so I can extend/retract without having to go look for the handle. I think (hope?) most of the people I fly with get the point when I brief "if you fly, you fly. if I REALLY want something different, I will say something". If you fly with "hand-hover-as-a-hint" make them do something that requires them to move the hand. Also, definitely, hover back when they fly. Can still remember the guy getting really annoyed with me keeping my hand on the gear handle the whole 30 mile final, but it was worth it.

It’s a two pilot concept. My hands are always ready to intercede, should the need arise. Why is this a bad thing?

I like flying with Captains like that. Let me make my error and correct me with a helpful suggestion (before it goes anywhere bad) that gets me back out of the hole I just dug for myself. I've been lucky, flown with many many more good CAs than bad helping me out over the last couple of years.

Because taking one second to move your hand from your lap to the gear lever or flap handle isn’t a safety concern.

It’s an unnecessary babysitting distraction on behalf of the five striper Chuck Yeager type in the left seat. Let the PF do his/her thing as long as its not a safety related or operational issue. If necessary, talk about issue on the ground after the Park Brake is set.

On the flip side of the coin, I was conducting line training with a new F/O. He gripped the Gear Lever before V1, to which I commanded, “Remove your hand from the G/L”. We discussed the matter once in cruise with the SOPs in hand. Once back at base, in briefing room, I had individual explained the importance of following SOPs, CRM and perils of uncommanded actions undertaken and or performed by the PM.
